B8 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1997 GALVESTON to Bosworth's CD earns rave reviews, slot on TV; 1 By CAROL CHRISTIAN The Dally News GALVESTON ibbi Bosworth, who grew up in Galveston, earned the right to sing country music on TV in an authentically hard- knocks way. In 1982, she left home at age 17 for Hollywood, bounced among New York, Boston, California, Nashville and Austin for the next dozen-plus years, got married and divorced, mourned the death of her alcoholic father, took a day job to pay the rent and landed gigs singing with her five-piece band at Austin's Continental Club and Broken Spoke. Bosworth can be seen at 5 p.m. Saturday on KUHT-TV Channel 8's "Austin City Limits." She is one of several performers in an all- country program. Imping the show in October was exciting, Bosworth said.

"It was quite an honor to be on that show," she said from her home in Austin. "Some incredible people like Willie Nelson have been on there." In the audience for the taping was Bosworth's mother, Jeanne who now lives in Meeker, with her husband, Joe Nadon. The Nadons moved there after his retirement in 1988 as director of Galveston's Traffic Depart ment. Jeanne Nadon was advertising manager at Eiband's department store from 1975 to 1985. Bosworth moved to Galveston-in 1971 at age 6, a couple of years before her parents divorced.

She attended Rosenberg Elementary School and Ban High School. "It was a surprise to all of us that she turned out to be a singer," Jeanne Nadon said of the youngest of her six children. "She's good, too. She's more like the Loretta Lynn ustin Otv Liinii GALVESTON Those years in beer joints have haunted me like a stray dog following me home ft just wouldn't give up till I fed ft. Bosworth who her mother said turned out voluminous poetry as a youngster writes the words and music for most of her songs. She wrote eight of the 11 songs on her compact disc, "Outskirts of You," produced last year by Records in Austin. Bosworth dedicated the album to her fother, Ted Bosworth.HI, who died in 1994. hi the liner notes, she writes about taking the bus from Galveston to Houston at the age of 9 or 10 to visit him.

"He always took me to a beer joint, usually during the day. There was always Schlitz, shuffleboard and a jukebox she wrote. "Daddy would tell me what to play and I'd punch those numbers for him. I'd watch the arm swing down over that 45 and hear the saddest, most hurting sounds come out of that jukebox country music Those years in beer joints have haunted me like a stray dog following me home it just wouldn't give up tUII fed it. Once I started feeding it, I couldn't get rid of it." Some of the songs on her CD were recorded in Nashville, where Bosworth sojourned' while trying to make it in professional radio.

After struggling a couple years against the idea that she would have to change her style to be successful, she came back to Austin, where she had spent two earlier stints. "I don't think have much success on new country stations, but OK," said Bosworth, 32, who now works as a computer consultant, fixing hardware and software during the week and singing with her band on weekends. Tm a country-music purist. I love George Strait, but my real loves go back to Loretta Lynn and Buck Owens." Although Bosworth didnt have music lessons as a child, she said many of her relatives had been amateur musicians. "There have been a lot of people on both sides of my family who have played music for fun," she said.

"There's tons. If a common thread in our family." In fact, the cover of her compact disc shows old pho- tographs of relatives playing guitars. Nadon said that the last time Bosworth visited Colorado, she went through a trunk looking for pictures but didn't explain what she planned to do with them. Bosworth, who taught herself to play the guitar in her late teens, doesn't play it to accompany herself hi live concert, she Kings and plays rhythm, but on recordings she only sings, with backup from her band. Recalling her attempts to learn the guitar, Bosworth laughingly told of taking the instrument with her to work at a movie studio in Hollywood.

1 would just bang and people would say, are you doing? You dont even know how to play that CftyUmfts." After she moved to New York, she took guitar lessons for a few months at The New School and learned "enough to play a few Beatles tunes." Later, in 1985, she took one semester of music lessons at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Bosworth's sister, Julie Boyle of La Marque, recalls that as a child Bosworth was always singing around the house. "She was always very lively, real high-energy," said 35, who does computer graphics for the University of Texas Medical Branch. Her husband Rick Boyle, is a Galveston police officer. "1 always thought she'd be doing something (artistic), maybe drama," JuHe Boyle said, recalling that after Bosworth left home, she came back a couple summers to perform in Galveston's outdoor musicals.

The other Bosworth children also pursued the arts. Robert Bosworth, 33, of Corpus Christi, plays guitar for fun. Larry Boeworth, 40, of San Diego, plays drums in a band and captains fishing boats. The two oldest siblings live in Meeker, Colo. Becky Langdon, 44, sings professionally, and Ted Bosworth IV, 45, is a computer technician who enjoys drawing and has a construction business.

Boyle said she admired her kid sister for having the courage to go after what she wanted. "She's very adventurous, and I admire her.
