BEIRUT (UPI). Sunni Moslem gunmen recaptured their headquarfrom: Druze militiamen and battled its rival force. "in every alleyway" of West Beirut in a drive to retake other lost strongholds. At least 17 people were reported killed. The fighting Friday between the Druze and the Sunni Mourabitoun militia was the heaviest since antigovernment rebels drove Lebanese army troops from West Beirut i in February.

Scattered clashes continued Friday night in the densely populated neighborhoods of the mostly Moslem area, despite a cease-fire call bv Hassan Khaled. the Sunni grand mufti and Shiite Moslem and Druze leaders. The appeal followed intense house-to-house battles that erupted when the Mourabitoun regrouped and launched a counterattack after being forced by the Druze from their West Beirut strongholds on Thursday. Beirut television said almost 100 people have been wounded since the Druze began their assault Thursday. The Druze claimed the Sunnis were responsible for violations of a ceasefire -declared last week at unsuccessful peace talks in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Druze raids were also Arab Factions Clash in Beirut Again prompted by concern over the Sunnis' close ties to Palestine Liberation Organization elements, whose return to Beirut the Mourabitoun supports. During the battles Friday, French Ambassador Fernand Wibaux told reporters his government would announce within 48 hours the pullout of its troops the last members of the multinational peacekeeping force from Beirut. Government spokesmen in Paris said only that any decision will be announced "at appropriate time." Embassy sources in Beirut said the contingent would leave within two weeks. Verbarg, 80, a resident of Four Seasons Retirement Center, died at midnight Friday at the Center.

He was a former feature and reporter for the San Francisco Herald and Oakland Tribune newspapers. During his career he was granted personal interviews with Gen: Douglas MacArthur, the Queen mother and Queen Elizabeth. He also had written two books. Funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Joseph McNally at 10 a.m.

Monday at St. Columba Roman Catholic Church. Calling hours will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hathaway-Myers Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Hayward, Calif.

Memorials may be. made to the Bartholomew County Library. Verbarg was born Oct. 26, 1903, in Jennings County, the son of W. and Catherine Gasper He was the widower of Gertrude Eaton Verbarg.

He had lived in California from 1926 until May 1981, when he moved to Columbus. He was one of the founders of Alameda County Historical Society, a member of Oakland Museum of History and the California Newspaper Guild. He was also a member of St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church at Oakland. Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Verbarg of Indianapolis; two nephews, Robert Verbarg of 9092 Tulip and Larry Verbarg of Indianapolis, and two nieces, Virginia Neff and Marilyn Marten, both of Indianapolis.

IUPUI Plans Two Nursing Workshops IUPUI Columbus will conduct workshops next week on Alzheimer's Disease and eye disorders. The class on eye disorders is designed for registered and licensed practical nurses. Anne Belcher, assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing, and Dr. George Brueggeman, Columbus ophthalmologist, will teach the workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wednesday at the campus, 2080 Bakalar. Alzheimer's. Disease will be the subject of a workshop to be taught from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday by Judith Pollman, nurse education specialist and consultant in geriatric nursing at the Veterans Association Center in Lexington, Ky.

Both workshops are being sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education in Nursing. Participants of each workshop will be charged a $35 fee. Those attending the class on eye disorders may earn seven" tact hours. The planning committee for the Alzheimer's workshop includes registered nurses Joan Able of Bartholomew County Hospital, Betty Blomquist of Jennings Community Hospital, Fran Cherry of the North Vernon Nursing Home, Dorothy Anderson of Madison State Hospital, JoAnn Rahm of Sancrest Medical Corp. and Ann Jones of the IUPUI Columbus staff.
