From 1 to 5 p.m. for 33 years, Ornelas promoted "a Texas sound" and helped organize events in the Hispanic community on KWED-AM radio. She started her radin career in 1952, only four years after the station began its afternoon Spanish language format. She first served as an assistant to then Spanish language programming director Dan Ramirez.

Ramirez died in 1958. Alfredo Herrera took over the programming job, and. Ornelas served under him. In 1966, Herrera moved on, and Ornelas became KWED's Spanish programming director and announcer. She has held the job ever since.

Though she played a variety of music, Ornelas says, "Ours was more of a Texas sound. Texas is well equipped with talent. I really leaned on our local groups," she says. She backed Tierra Tejana and The Broken Hearts from the beginning. "As far as the Chicano music industry, she played a big part.

We were sure she would do a good job and give everybody their share of time," says Lupe Gonzales, manager of Tierra Tejana. Ornelas made herself a music expert over the years. "She knew the story behind the group, the singers, the leader of the band. To me, that's what's going to be missed most of all.
