ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH RELIGION SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1989 6D Gorbachev Heads List Of '89 Religion Newsmakers, Poll Shows A lot of that Soviet bloc reform movement was fueled by the churches. By and large, that aspect hasn't been told. BILL THORKELSON, religion reporter from Minneapolis Wr fcH HRSSSSSSl BP A 1 1 mitted Communist, broke the pattern. "We need spiritual values," he told the pope.

The meeting presaged diplomatic relations between the two long-antagonistic leaderships, cleared the way for a possible papal visit to the Soviet Union and brought assurances from Gorbachev of broadened religious freedom. Those expanding religious freedoms already were proliferating in the Soviet orbit in the swift shift toward democracy in East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia in what some hailed as a triumph of faith over Marxism. That tide, and the fading of restrictions on religion in that area, even ahead of revised laws, was picked by religion news specialists as the year's third-ranking religion story. "A lot of that reform movement was fueled by the churches," said religion NEW YORK (AP) Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev leader of a government noted for atheism is the top "religion newsmaker" of this year, according to specialists in reporting that field.

A poll of members of the Religion Newswriters Association made that choice and also picked the extraordinary meeting of Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II as the No. 1 religion news story of the year. In a separate poll, the newswriters picked the nation's Catholic bishops as first-place winners of the "Into the Darkness Award" for secrecy in religious proceedings. The meeting between the pope and the top leader of the Soviet government was the first ever. The Soviets have for decades upheld atheism and spurned religion, shackling it.

Election by the Massachusetts diocese of the Episcopal Church of Barbara Clementine Harris, 55, as suffragan bishop, the first woman to become a bishop in the worldwide Anglican communion. 7.

A warning by U.S. Catholic bishops to politicians against backing legal abortion. Lucy Killea, running for the California state Senate, did so and was barred from receiving Holy Communion by San Diego's Bishop Leo Maher. She won the election. 8.

The Rev. George Augustus Stall-ings a black Catholic priest from Washington, was suspended after he formed his own congregation, calling Catholicism racist. 9. The Vatican-backed relocation of a Carmelite convent from the Auschwitz death camp after Polish Cardinal Jozef Glemp outraged Jews and some Catholic prelates with his comments about Jews in the controversy. 10.

Religious leaders condemned suppression of a student democracy movement in China, and the Dalia Lama, exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader, received the Nobel Peace Prize in a move to point up the brutal crackdown. Besides picking the top-rated religion stories, religion reporters singled out incidents that they said tended to cover up religious affairs and stifle the public's right to know. Cited for first place in this "Into the Darkness Award" was the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, who went into closed session for an entire afternoon at their meeting in November and refused to disclose even their topic. Second place went to the Southern Baptist Convention at which newly predominant fundamentalist trustees of denominational agencies summoned executives behind closed doors to lay down tightened rules. Other "darkness" citations went to Episcopal bishops, who barred reporters from small-group discussions about women bishops, and the United Church of Christ, which refused to divulge vote totals in election of the denomination's new president in which a white won over a black.

Jane E. Rand, Interim Assoc. Pastor BAPTIST SOUTHERN BAPTIST CHURCH on his settlement of a controversial state abortion case. The league had hoped to see the case prosecuted fully. On Dec.

18, the league called for the disciplining of the Catholic mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, alleging that he had caused "a grave scandal to the faithful" because he supported reinstatement of the abortion wing of Cook County Hospital. In response to the Pro-Life Action League, Bernardin issued a statement saying that he supported the bishops' resolution on abortion and that his pastoral approach "will continue to be one of dialogue and persuasion, the persistent effort to bring others to see and accept the human rights nature of the abortion questions and the moral dimensions of the issue." Frances Kissling, executive director of Catholics for a Free Choice, accused Human Life International of twisting her organization's positions. She noted that Catholics for a Free Choice neither performed abortions nor even endorsed abortion but only supported the right of a woman to make abortion-related choices. Joseph Scheidler, head of the Pro-Life Action League, said his group would continue to press the disciplining issue. He said he would try to meet directly with Pope John Paul II in Rome to present a list of politicians who support abortion rights in hopes of eliciting a statement from the Vatican.

The calls for discipline against dissenting Catholics come on the heels of a widely publicized recent incident involving Bishop Leo Maher of San Diego and California Assemblywoman Lucy Killea. The bishop told Killea that she would be ineligible to receive communion because of her support of abortion rights. THE KIRK OF THE HILLS 12928 Ladue Rd. at Mason Rd. 8:15, 9:30 I 11:00 AM Dr.

The Pro-Life Action League, based in Chicago, has called in the past month on Cardinal Joseph Bernardin to "exercise church discipline" over two well-known Catholic politicians for taking stands the league considers contrary to church teaching. And Human Life International of Gaithersberg, issued a statement Dec. 15 warning Catholics for a Free Choice about the possibility of excommunication. Catholics for a Free Choice is an organization of abortion-rights activists that is based in Washington. The politicians cited by the Pro-Life Action League are Illinois Attorney General Neil Hartigan and Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago.

The two groups attacked the politicians after a statement was issued by American Catholic bishops in November that "no Catholic can responsibly take a pro-choice stand" on abortion. The bishops said the stand was unacceptable because it cleared the way toward "killing a baby."
