Six of the hoodlums were arrested last week for failing to register with the police, as i required by Nevada law. Authorities were informed that the six were meeting at the Dunes. All 14 had been given free rooms, meals and I beverages and transportation by the Dunes. A police source said the 14 had not 'gone to the Dunes on a gambling A former head of the New York Police Department's Intelligence Section who now lives in St. Louis identified those arrested as members of the Colombo family.

Shenker said he was unaware of the men's backgrounds. He said some of them had stayed before at the Dunes and had been granted gambling credit privileges, some as much as $20,000. "I don't know that they're connected to subversives," Shenker said. "We don't check those things, and there's no way to check those things if we wanted to." The police source said the group had arrived in Las Vegas on Jan. 25.

They were given a total of 12 hotel rooms. Shortly after they arrived, Las Vegas police intelligence detectives got information of their presence. Detectives and agents of the Nevada Gaming Control Board placed the hoodlums under surveillance for 48 hours the length of time a convicted felon can legally remain in the state without registering. The police source said the men were observed gambling in the Dunes. On Monday afternoon, six of the 14 were arrested on misdemeanor charges of failing to register and failing to identify themselves.

They were an Authorities learned that the 14 were "comped" given free room and board by Robert Amira, a Dunes host who is married to Shenker's niece. Amira's state license as a "key employee" could be suspended if it is determined he was aware of the hoodlums' backgrounds. Shenker accused the police of overreacting. If I find out he did anything improper, of course I will take action. "These people have been coming here for some time individually. They just happened to be together at this time. Some of them have been coming here for at least a year. They have credit.

There's nothing in our files to indicate there's anything improper about them. They play big and they pay their bills. We have given them substantial credit." Harry Reid, chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, said he had requested an inquiry by the Gaming Control Board, the commission's investigative and enforcement arm. "We, of course, will first find out who allowed these people to come into the hotel and what this individual had known of their backgrounds," Reid said.
