THURSDAY. OCTOBER 2, 1997 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 5B OBITUARIES Joe F. Tangaro; Was Wrestler, Restaurateur Lewis H. Haupt 72; Khoury League Founder Hills Country Club in Kirkwood when he retired in 1993 and moved to Florida.

A mAmnriul Moco i to St. Louis, where wrestling promoter Sam Much-nick was running a major league circuit "Wrestling at the Chase" (Park Plaza Hotel). Mr. Tangaro's success in it afforded him the opportunity to buy a restaurant on South Broadway, which he named Joe Tangaro's Chariton Restaurant. He ran the business for 20 years before he sold it and retired in 1984.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at John L. Ziegenhein Sons Funeral Home, 4830 Lemay Ferry Road, Mehlville. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Mary Mother of the Church Catholic Church, 5901 Kerth Road, South County.

Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Among the survivors are his wife, Mary Lou Tangaro; two sons, Dr. Joseph F. Tangaro Jr. of South County and Thomas L.

Tangaro of Sunset Hills; a stepdaughter, Deborah Lyle of Texas; two stepsons, Douglas Denoyer and David Denoyer, both of South County; four sisters, Katherine Fratto, Mary Sprague and Velia Cuatto, all of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Anita VanDyke of California; and 11 grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association of St. Louis, 3945 West Pine Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63108.

Joe F. Tangaro, a former professional wrestler, restaurateur and civic leader in St. Louis, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) at his home in south St. Louis County.

He was 70. For nearly 14 years, Mr. Tangaro battled ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease an illness that attacks motor cells in the spinal cord. As a past president of the local chapter of ALS, he helped to raise thousands of dollars to battle the disease locally and nationally. He was honored for his contributions to ALS in 1985 during the banquet preceding the St.

Louis Italian International Golf Tournament. In 1988, he received the Sam Muchnick Ambassador to Sports Award. He was active in several community and civic groups including serving as president of the Professional and Business Men's Club of The Hill. Born and raised in Price, Utah, Mr. Tangaro graduated from the University of Utah, where he played football and was an all-conference lineman and wrestler.

29, 1997) at a hospital in Clearwater, Fla. He was 72 and lived in Clearwater. Mr. Haupt, formerly of Crestwood and Des Peres, founded the Crestwood Khoury League in 1957. He had also served as the first president of the baseball league.

His 22-year commitment to the sports program led to its success for thousands of children. Mr. Haupt was born Palmerton, Pa. He graduated from the University of Delaware and was a pilot and flight engineer in the Army Air Forces in World War II. From 1948 to 196Q, he was a manufacturers representative for the old Amalgamated Leather Co.
