B2 Tht RcpubMc Columbus, nd, Tuesday, September 30, 1986 brother! Cubs' Maddux outduds Phils' Maddux T.lajor Leagues League game, It was: DODGERS II, PADRES I At San Diego, Orel Hershiser scattered eight hits for his first shutout of the season and Jose Gonzales, Pedro Guerrero and Mike Sdosda homered. Hershiser improved to 14-13. Loser Ray Hayward, 0-2, lasted 2 2-3 innings, during which he uncorked three wild pitches and committed an error and a balk. In the American League, it was: TWINS INDIANS At Minneapolis, Randy Bush's two-out single in the eighth inning lifted the Twins. Bert Blyleven improved to 16-14 despite surrendering three home runs to set a record of 49 homers allowed in a season.

Hall of Famer Robin Roberts had held the previous record, 46 with the 1956 Phillies. i YANKEES BLUE JAYS 1 -At New York, Dennis Rasmussen, 17-6, scattered six hits and Dave Winfield drove in his 100th and 101st runs of the season to lead the Yankees. Winfield became the first Yankee since Joe DiMaggio to drive in at least '100 runs in five straight seasons. DiMaggio's streak i lasted seven straight years (1936- RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 5 At Boston, Wade Boggs went 2 for 4 to raise his major league-leading batting average to .353 and drove in three runs to lead the Red Sox. Boston needs towin its remaining six games to record a 100-victory season for the first time since 1946.

RANGERS 3, A'S I At Arlington, Texas, Pete Incaviglia hit a two-run homer and Ed Correa and Jeff Russell combined on a four-hitter to lead the Rangers. Correa, 12-13, gave up one hit, struck out eight and walked three before leaving after six innings with a sore right arm. Russell notched his second save. ROYALS 2, ANGELS 1 At Kansas City, Lonnie Smith homered and George Brett doubled in a ruwtffiof Hcjcls. Mark -Gubicza, who gave up a homer to Mark Ryal in the fourth inning, improved to 11-6.

Bud Black finished for his eighth save. California starter Urbano Lugo fell to 1-1. At Chicago, heavy rains forced postponement of the game between the Mariners and the White Sox. Weather permitting, the game will be made up as part of a double-header tonight. "I'm happy to beat any team; I had four straight loses.

It is Just a coincidence it was against my brother," the Phillies right-hander said. "I felt for him when be was getting hit It was fun batting against him and, when he came up, I really tried to strike him out Now we are going out to dinner." The game is believed to be the first time in major-league history two rookie pitchers started against each other. "I'm sure my parents are happy, at least one of us got a win' the Cubs right-hander said. "But everybody is making too much of this. Blood is thicker than water but I really wanted this game.

This was the first time I ever saw him pitch. He deserved to win; he pitched well." In the only other National Chicago Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux can thank Jody Davis for a few months of bragging rights in the Maddux household. I Greg Maddux outpitcbed brother, Mike Monday night to lead the Cubs over the host Philadelphia Phillies 8-3. It was the first big-league pitching matchup between brothers since Sept 13, 1SS2, when Joe Niekro beat brother Phil at Atlanta. ALTHOUGH GREG Maddux will be named the best pitching Maddux circa 1986, Davis contributed more than any pitch thrown.

Davis went 4 for and drove in five runs. Phillies' Manager John' Felske, who arranged the family affair when he held back Mike Maddux a day in the rotation, ordered Leon Durham walked twice intentionally to pitch to Davis. Davis slugged a three-run home run in the futo, his 2Cih hosier of the season, and, in the ninth, be singled home two runs. "Dont ask me if I would do it again," Felske said about walking Durham. "I showed you I would do it again.

It didn't work either time. I'm not sure if I would do it again tomorrow." GREG MADDUX improved his. record to 2-4 and Mike dropped to 3-7. t- Sports Scoreboard Television Yankees 8 Blue Jays 1 TORONTO NEW YORK abrhbi abrhbi Femandz ss 3 0 I OHendersn cf 4 3 I 0 Houston Pittsburgh West Denver Seattle Kansas City San Diego LA Raiders I 3 0 250 80 75 1 3 0 .250 39 98 '4 0 0 1.000 119 73 3 10 .750 105 67 3 1 0 .750 08 67 1 3 0 .250 97 95 1 3 0 .250 60 75 Lee ss 0 00 0Randolph2b3 0 1 0 40 I OFIschllnzb 0 00 0 National Today QBmbtt Chicago at Philadelphia ImM 6 35 p.m. Cincinnati at Atlanta SckMllbtr 9 p.m.
