Champion has a case full of champi- onship trophies from the last two years to prove his point and his Granite City team is snowing signs oi once again being one of the best in the area. LEGION NOTES: The three-way race in Conference No. 2 of Missouri District 10 is hot enough on the field, but it haatol nn nff tha fiaM tnn limon C0V- erai uanwin ians iook exception neve lueur ieuii uuiiiu a By Gary Mueller Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Two years ago a young Granite City team that wasn't supposed to win, surprisingly captured the Illinois District 22 American Legion baseball championship. "We weren't expected to get out of our district," said a pleased Granite City Manager Babe Champion at that time.

"From here on, anything we get is a bonus. Just the experience we're gaining for next year is enough for me." Champion got quite a bonus. That year, his team added the Illinois Fifth Division championship to its district laurels and came within one game of winning the state title, bowing in the final to Arlington Heights, which went on to finish second in the Legion World Series. Last year, Granite City was a favorite from the opening day of the season and lived up to its billing, again winning the District 22 and Fifth Division titles, but again falling to Arlington Heights in the state championship game. This year, with an inexperienced pitching staff, Granite City was expected to drop back among the also-rans, but it's 1976 all over again.

"Our high school team was only 12-12," said Champion, who also coaches the Granite City South High team, "but we had a lot of youngsters who just needed time to come around, plus we have three players who are a year out of high school to add experience." Granite City is atop the North Division standings of District 22, one-half game ahead of second-place Alton. In the South Division, Marissa climbed within one game of first-place Cahokia by scoring two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Cahokia, 2-1, on Thursday. That triumph ended a week in which the top teams took turns knocking each other off. Thoman-Boothe remained No. 1 despite bowing to Creve Coeur in the semifinals of the Ballwin tourney.

win, No. 2, lost to Creve Coeur in the toumey final, but Creve Coeur, the heir apparent to the top spot, stumbled two nights later by losing to unranked Ferguson. "We lost our season opener to Alton, but then won seven in a row before Cahokia beat us two weeks ago," said Champion. "We had them (Cahokia) down, but they came back to nip us. Cahokia probably is as strong an offensive club as we've seen all year.

They can really hit the ball." Granite City hasn't had any trouble hitting either, led by shortstop Tommy Hennrich, who in last week's Post-Dispatch Legion statistics led all area players with a lofty .516 batting average. "This is his fourth year starting on the Legion team and he's always done a nice job for us," said Champion. "He always hustles, he moves the ball around and he's a good, little ballplayer. "We really don't have any sluggers, though. Our pitchers are young, but they're coming along well.

They don't overpower anyone, but they make them hit the ball and our more experienced players play a pretty solid defense. If we can get some men on base and put together a couple singles, we're usually OK. Our strength probably is our depth. We can go to our bench and not be hurt much at all at almost any position." Holdovers from the starting lineup of the 1976 and 1977 District 22 championship teams include, in addition to Hennrich, catcher Keith Champion and in-fielders Mike Clark and Randy Smith, although Clark has been sidelined recently after suffering a broken nose when hit in the face by a pitched ball. "He's just a powerful pitcher. 3-ie's a great athlete and he's got a great curveball.

He's left-handed and he's younger. Left-handers just have a way of lasting longer. Two years ago, I would ha said Seaver and over a six-year period, Seaver was the best I ever saw. fiu; i don't think Seaver is through by any means." Rogers was McDonald's third pitching selection. BILL LUCAS, Atlanta Braves "Parker because of his size, speed and I think he can be better, but a big man who can do what he can do and run that fast, whew!" Lucas took Winfield next and then Templeton third.

"He's not having a real good year," said Lucas of Templeton, "but he's GOING to have a lot of real good years." In order, Lu-: cas took Blue, Seaver and Carlton as his pitchers. Kennedy talked of the possibilities of Greg Luzinski of Philadelphia and Garvey, but confined his choices (Cedeno, Simmons, Morgan) to players who play "up the middle." Kennedy said, "If you're talking of complete players, I've got to stay in the middle. Parker's a pretty good outfielder but he plays the wing (right field) and how many RBIs did he have for hitting .338 and leading the league?" Answer: 88. The Cubs' executive said he would take Simmons "over Bench or any other catcher in the league" and that "nobody has more talent than Templeton." Kennedy opted for Seaver, Rogers and Candelaria as his pitchers although he said that Rogers soon will inherit the No. 1 mantle.

"Some day, he's going to win close to 30 games," said Kennedy. "He never has any arm problems, he pitches nine innings and he never misses a turn." CHARLIE FOX, MontreaL Expos "Cedeno can do everything when he's well. Parker is getting kind of big in the butt and legs." Fox's second pick was Morgan. "If I had to have one player to win a game, it would be him." Fox took Foster third and nominated only two pitchers Blue and Seaver. I think Winfield is a much better runner than Foster but Foster is the more dangerous hitter. And he's a pretty good outfielder." As pitchers, Peterson chose Rogers, then Seaver and then Carlton, omitting Blue. BOB FONTAINE, San Diego Padres After waxing enthusiastic about Parker, Fontaine became the first executive to recognize Concepcion. "Without him, Cincinnati doesn't play," said Fontaine.

"Defensively, he's outstanding, but he hits and hits with power. How many shortstops hit like him? I think he's one of the most underrated players in the National League." Fontaine's third choice was Foster. Fontaine took Blue over Seaver and Rogers. "When he's right, he just fights you power for power," said Fontaine. PAUL OWENS, Philadelphia Phillies Owens, too, took Parker because of his size-speed parlay.

"Eventually, he's going to end up with better power than he's shown (Parker's highest home run total has been 25). He just hasn't had to do it yet, but with (Willie) Stargell not going to be there forever, he'll have to. Parker is just like those football linemen those 280-pound guys who have that great lateral speed." Owens voted for Bench second. "I know he's had problems, but no one can do more for his ballclub." He chose Winfield over Foster on the basis of defense and his pitchers were Seaver, Blue and Rogers, much like everyone else's. When the season ends, unless Dave Parker's contract is adjusted by Pittsburgh, the Pirates could be looking at a rather large void in right field.

Peterson said he has met with Parker and his agent once about contract "and we intend to have more meetings. I'm always an optimist," said Peterson. But maybe Dick Wagner was right. Parker will have even more ammunition than ever at his disposal at the bargaining table this winter. Because the men who dole out the money say that Dave Parker is the best.

His injury has just put a tremendous gap in the Houston club. He's of their first eight. The players' role reversal is evident on the court. Once, it was Connors throwing the aggressive punches and boring in for the killer shots at the net. Saturday, Borg was serving so much thunder that he broke strings on two different racquets.

Another time, he served so hard the racquet flew out of his hand. Both players were physically fit for the final, in contrast to last year when Connors played with a fractured right thumb and their Grand Prix Masters final in January when Borg was weak with a virus (Connors won in three sets). Saturday night, Borg was to have the first dance at the Wimbledon ball with Martina Navratilova of Czechoslovakia. She made Wimbledon's roll of honor by downing two-time champion Chris Evert of Fort Itiuderdale, in Friday's women's singles final, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Top-seeded South Africans Frew McMillan and B.ob Hewitt scored a runaway 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over unseeded John McEnroe of Douglaston, N.Y., and Peter Fleming of Chatham, N.J., to win the men's doubles title for the third time.

Hewitt, 38, and McMillan, 36, had won previously in 1967 and 1972. Their combined age of 74 gave them a 32-year advantage over the Americans.
