S.F. THERE'S A SWITCH that too, would like to see mentioned more often. DEAR MARTHA: I have a problem which I hope you will write about in your Friday column.

It's about Ted, a boy I have been going with for six months against my parents' wishes. He is younger and shorter than I and not especially good-looking. He wears thick glasses. He never has participated in sports. My father says that anyone who isn't interested in sports must have something wrong with him.

am his first girl. We have done some serious love-making and I guess he thinks he owns me. He says he loves me and considers us "engaged to be engaged." My mother says a girl should think of a boy as the future father of her children and pick one that they would be proud of. She points out that Ted couldn't protect me if we were ever accosted on the street or in his car. Frankly, Martha, some of these points make sense to me and I'm getting tired of Ted.

But I don't know what to do about him. He comes over or calls every night and I have no chance to meet other fellows. Please answer in your column and give me your opinion of the points my parents have raised. BLONDIE THERE'S NO POINT in commenting, point by point, upon your reservations about Ted. None of these criticisms would make sense if you were fond of him.

It is obvious that you are not. Also obvious is the fact that you need to know many more boys before you can develop standards of your own that would stand up against your parents' objections. Send Ted packing and make yourself available to invitations from others. Having your first girl-hoy party and trout to make sure it's a stringing affair? Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope for Martha Carr "Garnet for Teen-Agers" and "Scavenger Hunt." DON JAMES made some handy holders for screwdrivers, files and chisels: I cut bamboo sections from an old fishing pole. At the top of each section, the cut was made just below the joint, and at the bottom, just below a joint.

This leaves a hollow section all the way from the top except for the solid section at the bottom. A hole is then drilled up near the top of each section. This is used to hang the holder on the shop wall. D.B, THESE HOLDERS hang nice ly on hooks in pegboard walls, too. UfcAK al: I tie tew times a home handyman would have use for scaffolding may make this kind of equipment a bad invest ment.

However, a sturdy scaffold can be made by using a pair of stepladders and a straight ladder for the horizontal piece. After the straight ladder has been placed across the step ladders, a wide board can bo laid down on the rungs to form the platform. Since the ladder is designed to hold your weight anyway, there is no problem with it breaking with you on it as there might be with a board by itself. L.M.F. A GOOD idea, and it's so sim ple, but please brace the step- ladders, for security's sake.

DEAR AL: Here is my metb od of having wallpaper patch pieces tnat will match wnat is on the wall. Nearly everyone has a couch somewhere in the house that backs up to the wall. Pin the patch pieces to the back of the couch where they will never be seen. Most any couch will be big enough for all the patch pieces you would ever need for every room in the house. They will weather the same way the paper on the wall does, and, therelore, will be a perfect match at patch time.

MRS. A.V A SUPER HIM: if you are puttying in a wood-framed win dow, here is a trick that will improve the bond of the putty, Once again, borrow your wife's tracing wheel from her sewing basket. Run this along the strip on the window frame where you plan to putty. As the putty is worked into place, it will be forced into the little holes made by the spiked wheel. This will give added "roots' to the putty when it is dry.

Louis local college entertaining groups that appeared on the All-American College Show, filmed last July in Hollywood, and has already shown in many other cities. Zarka attends St. Louis Institute of Music and Washington University. He plays the Hammond organ and sings. John Gillick, drummer, attends Mer-amec Community College and plays drum.

Donna Boxx, vocalist, attended Florissant Valley Community College. This show will be seen in St. Louis for the first time at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow on Channel 11. Steppenwolf will a a in concert at o'clock tonight at Kiel Auditorium.

Joe Smith is also on the program. Steppenwolf was in July 1967 and issued a sensationally successful first album for Dunhill just six months later. Members are: John Kay, guitar and lead singer; Michael Allen Monarch, guitar; Nick St. Nicholas, guitar; Jerry Edmonton, bass; and Goldy McJohn, organist-pianist. Larry Knight's new group is known as the PAX.

Larry is remembered for his former band, Larry Knight and the Upsetters, who headlined the bill at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go Gaslight Square for more than a year. Since early 1969, PAX has been performing from Florida to Wisconsin and will be heard soon in Words By Mike Royko Chicago Dally Newi Service CHICAGO, Dec. 19 VICE PRESIDENT Spiro T. Agnew, in his blast at the press, says our days of immunity from criticism are over. He says we will be called upon to defend and explain what we write.

I'm all for that. A newspaperman should be as i 1 1 i to stand behind his work as a politician's ghost writer. In the past. I've made some wild statements and they often come back to haunt me. People have remembered, and bring them up.

Some examples: SIR: All during 1968, you kept saying that you had a secret to end the war in Vietnam. You even said you had it right there in your coat pocket. So we bought a four-year subscription, but so far you have not revealed the plan. What has happened, you crook? WELL, LET ME explain that, here and now. I really did have a secret plan to end the war, and I carried it around in my coat pocket, so I could pat it whenever I mentioned it, which is the greatest proof there is.

However, one night while bowling with Slats Grobnik I laid my coat on the back of the seats and somebody came along and filched my wallet along with the secret plan. Thus, history was changed. that happened to be the only copy of my secret plan. And it was such a big secret that nobody knew the details, including me. So I ask the person who took it to keep the money, but please return the plan.

Or, return the money and keep the plan. SIR: In 1968 you kept writing that there was too much crime and violence and that Attorney General Ramsey Clark should be fired. Now he has been fired for almost a year. But we still have a lot of crime uid violence. What happened? Medical research is important. But our best economists say it is not a good investment. After all, when you eliminate a disease, people eventually die of something else anyway. SIR: You said in 1968 that people should stop shouting at each other. You said the country should be brought together.

Now even a soft-spoken, gentle soul like Spiro Agnew is sharp-tongued. What happened? LET ME MAKE this clear: The idea was that people should stop shouting words I disagree with. And the people should have been brought together -in total agreement with me. But if people get out of line, you have to yell at them. It looks as4f West has led from "top of a sequence," probably four cards or longer. If it is exactly four long, you are safe because the defense can never take more than two spades, one diamond and one club. It's the "or longer" that should bother you; you can't afford to give up three spades in addition to your minor suit losers. Assuming that West holds a long spade suit, you can see that he has become your "dangerous opponent;" you want to keep him out of the lead if you can. How might he get in? With the club king? Not a chance: if he had it, it would be fi-nesseable.

Only with the diamond ace. Then you had better give it to him immediately, while you still hold a second spade stopper. Duck the first trick and win the spade return. Lead a diamond to the queen. If West plays low, you have just found your ninth triok and can turn your attention to the club suit.

If he rises with the ace to clear the spade suit, he takes the last spade out of his partner's hand. Now you can take the club nesse without danger. East, on lead, cannot hurt you. Should he produce a fourth spade, the suit will have divided 4-4. When he cannot, the rest of the tricks are yours.

Anybody can make a hand when their finesses win. Start learning to make them when they don't. Do you have a bridge problem? What is your problem? To make the hand if the finesse doesn't work. Can you do it? Cover the defenders' cards and project the play. If East has the club king, you have only eight top tricks: four clubs, two Spades and two hearts. You need one diamond trick for game. Suppose you test the club suit immediately.

You duck the first spade, win the second and take a losing club finesse. East wins and clears the spade suit. Now you need a diamond trick. But when you lead the suit, West grabs the ace and rattles off two more spades to set the contract. What went wrong?
