Cox in the Nov. 4 general election. Political experts think DeVore-has' a chance to overtake Cox, 45, Anderson, who defeated Republican Charles Loos in 1982. Libertarian Gregory H. Foyer, 30, of Indianapolis also is on the general election ballot.

ALL THREE CANDIDATES were nominated at political party conventions, and voters statewide will cast ballots Nov. 4 for auditor. Cox and DeVore believe up-to-date computer technology is needed to help keep track of state receipts and disbursements and improve the efficiency of the office, while Foyer said he's in the running primarily to fill out the libertarian History shows that neither of the. major parties has established a stranglehold on the auditor's office. Loos held it from 1978-82.

Democrat Mary Aikens. Currie served two terms from 1970-78. Republicans held the office from 1966-70. Cox said the workload of the auditor's office has increased as the state has added more agencies, "Each year we've seen a constant increase in the amount of various payments or vouchers being processed at our office," he said. "WE'RE CONSTANTLY changing equipment and procedures (and) "State government needs to set goals," she said.

"I feel that our county government sets goals and reaches them instead of being in day-to-day crisis." ONE OF DEVORE 'S goals is to reorganize and update the computer technology available to the auditor's office. "The (Indiana) General Assembly could benefit greatly in getting an updated report of revenues and expenditures," she said. DeVore said she has based her campaign on technology, timeliness and teamwork. "They all pretty well fit together," she said. "I feel very positive about winning the election.

I've traveled around the state getting good, positive input from people who have never met me before." DeVore, married with two daughters, is a graduate of Franklin College. LIBERTARIAN CANDIDATE Foyer said his "primary goal is to fill out the slate in the event of a Libertarian change of heart among the voters." Foyer, married with two children, is a certified public accountant with a private practice in Indianapolis. He has never before run for an elected office. He said he. is.

DeVore, 49, Columbus, was elected Bartholomew County auditor in 1982 and has been active in community organizations. "not strong supporters" of the candidate they favored. The surveys backed up Republican hopes for a significant gain in this year's 36 gubernatorial contests, with a net gain of six to 'nine governorships apparently possible.

Among the major states that could change political hands in their top executive offices, the polls suggested, are Texas and Florida, possibly going Republican, and Pennsylvania, possibly going Democratic. AS IN A similar poll of congressional districts earlier, the surveys showed President Reagan's popularity and policies are a big factor in the Senate battles and certainly a majoj bolster to Republican hopes of retaining control of one chamber in Congress. Still, the polls said, the single strongest link to the Senate vote appears to be each constituent's feeling about the U.S. economic future and there the trend favors the Democrats. Among the key races, the poll indicated that Rep.

W. Henson Moore, who won the Louisiana open primary to replace outgoing Sen. Russell Long, a Democrat, now trails Rep. John Breaux, by 5 percentage points, 44 percent to 49 percent. Leaders Unitad Prasi International WASHINGTON Control of the Senate is clearly within Democratic party grasp three weeks before Election Day, and Republicans appear poised to gain several governorships, says a Washington Post-' ABC News poll published Thursday. The series of based on 13,838 interviews in all 34 states holding Senate elections Nov. 4, showed Democrats leading in five states that have Republican incumbents Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Nevada and North Dakota. MISSOURI IS THE only state where a Republican was shown leading in the race for a seat now held by a retiring Democrat.

Of the four states rated as "toss- ups," North Carolina, South Dakota and Washington have GOP incumbents, and Colorado has a retiring Democrat. If all the candidates hold the leads they had during the polling, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 10, and the four "tossup" races split evenly between the parties, Democrats would make a net gain of five seats and claim a 52-to-48 Senate majority when the 100th Congress convenes in January. BARRY SUSSMAN, director of polling operations for the Post, cautioned that the Senate campaigns are "far from over" and there is pieniy oi give many oi uie races.
