Living today Del Rio News-Herald Section Rio, 78140 Thursdoy, toptombor 16, 1902 RANDOLPH A. PAFFORD Charter members recalled One of the six charter members of the First United Methodist Church, celebrating its centennial this weekend, was Randolph A. Pafford. He was a native of North Carolina, born there in 1809. He married Mary Phillips in 1832; her ancestors had been cofounders of Harvard and founders of Exeter Academy and Phillips Academy.

The Paffords moved to Texas in the early 1850s and in 1888 they were one of the five families who came to this area, drawn by San Felipe Springs. These five men bought land and established the San Felipe Agricultural, Manufacturing and Irrigation Co. The irrigation system was the basis for the growth of the community. Later, Pafford built the first grist mill in this vicinity. Th Pafford family deeded the lot on what was Cemetery Street, now Pecan, and gave $500 for the building of the first Methodist Church.

He served as steward and was a stalwart member until his death in 1891. His great-granddaughter, Mrs. Frances Held Manning, still resides in Del Rio. A SHORT SKIRT takes a long jacket, in Marc Bohan's gray wool herringbone suit pinstriped in black, for Chrisitan Dior. Matchaing greatcoat, falling loose and straight, is cuffed and collared in black snakeskin, drops below suit to cover black suede boots.

Hat and scarf also by Dior. Fall couture collections BLACK AND WHITE is a strong Paris theme. Emanuel Ungaro's ivory wool jacket, cut away over the slim, short skirt, is bordered and accented in geometric slivers of black. Strapped pumps and Jean Barthet's black velvet "kepi" hat go with the slimmer, shorter silhouette. Meat and Vegetable Stuffed Squash By Aileen Claire NBA Food Editor Squash was known and eaten by the Indian in the Western Hemisphere long before the white man began his exploration.

Fall and winter squash, such as hubbard and acorn, make ideal dessert and vegetable side dishes. They also may be stuffed and served as a main course. For example, hearty squash boats are filled with a combination of ground beef, onions and fresh tomatoes and cheese that go a long way to make a satisfy- ing meal in these days of weight-consciousness. Serve with fresh fruit for dessert for a light dinner. HEARTY SQUASH BOATS 1 large acorn oil 1 small oinon, chopped cup) 1 small garlic, minced pound ground 2 medium-site fresh tomatoes, peeled, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped celery teaspoon salt teaspoon dried leaf orogano teaspoon dried leaf basil cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided acorn squash in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds and fibers.

Place in baking pan, cut-side down, with water. Bake in 400-degree oven 20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat oil in large skillet. Add onion and garlic; cook until tender. Add ground beef; stirring with fork until browned.

Stir in tomatoes, celery, salt, oregano, basil, thyme and cup shredded cheese. Turn squash halves cut-side up. Carefully scoop out pulp without breaking skin; add pulp to ground meat mixture. Spoon squash mixture into shells; sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in 350-degree oven 20 minutes.

This kitchen-tested recipe makes 2 servings. Paris turns to shaped silhouette By Rosette Hargrove PARIS (NBA) Yves St. Laurent summed up the Paris couture fall collections when he said: "I am rebelling against the sad, dull times we live in. I want a little gaiety." The couture is following its leader, abandoning all heavy layering and going back to shapely silhouettes that are always slim, even when straight-cut. St.

Laurent goes all out for shape, with echoes of the Belle Epoque or even of the 1947 New Look in the nipped-in waist of a red hipbone jack- et with black, bold notched collar and lapels. The full skirt is black, as is the bowed taffeta blouse. At Givenchy, fit is stretched into the long torso bodice with a skirt shirred on at the hipline or into a slim, chemise cut. His most elegant long-torso dress is in fuchsia and blue moire satin, with mink bordering the low, Mary Stuart neckline and running around the hip where the flared skirt is shirred. Both St.

Laurent and Givenchy use big sleeves to dramatize their fitted or slim clothes, but some designers return to the slender, set-in sleeve, notably Ungaro. He has abandoned the extravagantly mixed prints that put him in the front rank of the couture, preferring to do his chemise silhouette in graphics detailing. He sets in geometric slivers of black wool or velvet asymmetrically on a white suit jacket, or places them to quarter a white chemise dress. Ungaro's use of black and white is repeated in most Paris collections. At Pierre Balmain, black and white tweed in a dashing spencer- jacketed suit is edged in black leather.

Louis Feraud uses zebra-striped melton for a short wrap coat shawl- collared in black mink that also rings the armholes. At Nina Ricci, sophistication returns in a side-draped wrap skirt of pincheck black and white wool, bordered in the black of the jet-embroidered bolero jacket. A high- necked black jersey blouse and dramatic "musketeer" hat complete the costume. Marc Bohan's suits at Christian Dior show slimness in varied proportions. Long jackets go over short skirts, and short jackets pair with long skirts.
