Cp- Thedeathot Judge Lackland, which annouBced I as having occurred at eleven o'clock on Saturday night last, will be regretted by all who knew hlssrsasaxeaUaaea and true worth.

He was a plain man, entirely BMbtruslve, yet blunt and outspoken when occasion required. Ia former years, before the disease which caused 'Ala death had developed itself, he engaged arduously in the practice of law, and but a few years alnee be was ef counsel ia a great many of tbe more important causes In our courts. Hia policy at the bar wna straightforward, there being not the least of the demagogue in his nature. He always drove right straight at the objective point of tbe case at bar, letting ail aide Issues alone until he had attained the end fee desired. He was not an eloquent man ta the sense ot the word that comprises the rules ef or story, jet but few men possessed the convincing power before a jury that he always ahplayed.

He was accustomed to calling tbirgs by their right names, not in the vulgar sense, but in the common sense style of a -ran who is fearless ot the jaerssod tr.achiDatioDS ot nnscrnpnlous men. He was an trprigbt lawyer and a just judge. But tew ot the men who hav. enjjyed judicial boner in this country, and few cities have had a batter class of judges than St. Louis, have gained fo thoroughly the respect and unalloyed oon-fidenee of tbe people as -lodge Lackland.

In tbe department of criminal taw ha was peiujhrly successful, and many thought when he was elevated to the criminal bench that he would prove too harsh and uayield-in for the position. But In this they were tcistskc-n, for a more discriminating, oour-tious and kind-hearted man to the weak and unfortunate class, whose easse were brought before that tribunal, baa not been known. When it became ntcessarv to pronounce sentence on these condemned to punishment, he alwavi exhibited the atmost tenderness and apparent reluctance to perform the duty in-rumbt-nt epon him as the' representative of justice. One occasion is remembered by the writer, when it became his painful duty to pronounce sentence of death upon a woman who had been found guilty ot taking tbe life of her illicit lover in a fit of Jsalouiy. The condemned woman was brought Int the court room before the opening ot tbe morning session, expecting sentence) to bs pronounced upon ber.

Judge Lackland sited, before calling ber before him. as if oppressed with the weight ot some impending' strugvle. and it was not nnUl late In the moruing session that the cause of hia seeming trepidation was developed. He called the prisoner to the bar and in the most childlike manner snd with delicate tones of Jlue recounted to her the nature of the crime-she had committed. Not one word ot unseemly reproach was uttered by htm.

ant when he carte to pronounce the sentence and called upon God to bave mercy tjivxi b-r soul, it was with tha utmost dirtu-ultv he ctuld articulate the needed words, so fall was he ot tears at th? contemplation of the consummation of the avvful sea'rncs that he was He wept like child, and it was several minutes be so far recovered his If-possr-s-ioa as to resume tbe business of. his conrt. He exhibited fo much devotion to the ad-Kiclstra'lon of Justice in tha criminal department, that he was afterward elevated to the judgeship of tbe circuit court, where be showed himself equal to be arduous duties imposed npon him. He had a bru-q-ae manner with bim that sometimes appeared harsh, but the youngest and most humble member ot tbe bar could always depend, ur-on the graating of an) motion that tbe justice of bis ease demanded. In tte latter part ol bis life Jud-e Lackland was a devoted CarUtian, and men lived with more true determination to answer tbe expectations imposed upon them than be.

In tha tuteriBt time and the most exacting contents he never spoke unkindly of hia neighbor, mil although he sabered with the utmost rrrtinaciry to his own opinion he conceded te ethers tbe right to tbe unin'er-ropted et.jjyment of their vies, widely they may have differed from his He was a man of strong au4 decided political views, and did not hSsUate to them, even in times when it was hazardous to do so, yet be was never a candidate political cilice, although often solicited to accep' nomination for high le gislative and honors. Few zaen are left us wto cccupj so exalted a place in our esteem. Tbe bar is less pure without bim, and the community has lost one of Its truest men. To whom nbaM we look for alike exam-'Isry lift Where is hi compeer to be we cannot answer 1 Judge Lackland was born in Mont-ffcnety county, Maryland.
