There Is no abatement hi the excitement over the miserable manner in which the census has been taken. Complaints of omissions are received by the score, and the general feeling pervading all classes of citizens is one of intense disgust and indignation at the wretched bungling which has characterized the working of the local census bureau under the direction of Mr.

While llittit.g about among the anxious poli ticians who had assembled early yesterday morning to discuss and forecast tiie possible lesultot the Cincinnati Convention, a reporter ot the Post-Dispatch unexpectedly ran across one of the numerous census takers who are now being called to task lor giving st. Louisa position among the cities ot he country almost as low down in the scale, in the line of population, as Cincinnati. This candid enumerator, who was in a proper con iliuoii to give full vent to his sentiments, gave the reasons that had caused the enumerators to neglect their work, and asserted that there as no denying the fact that a large portion ot the population had been entirely ignored. lie said that ne nau ocen cieiegaieu to canvass district b4 between Victor and Arsenal streets, end that he had made a perfect enumeration, but would not rile his returns with the supervisor for thiee days. According to his estimate, St.

ixmis ought to be ci edited with a population ranging all the way trom between lour bundled thousand and half a million souls. Many of the enumerators had negh cted to take the names ot babies, and others had paid no attention whatever to persons who have recently located in the city. At this point the repoiter asked him what had induced this almost univcisai negligence among the enumerators, when he very promptly leplied; "You see, my friend, the law under hu-n Ave were appointed provided that we should receive 1 a day and no more; that we should work torn period not to exceed litteen days and be paid at the rate of two cents a head.5' According to this law he iiiiiintained that most of the enumerators, as soon as thev had succeeded in enrolling 2oO names in any single day, consider their task linished tor the time being, so far as their piy as concerned. He believed it to be bad policy to make la bor a meie matter of conscience in a warm climate, and attributed the outrage the city has sunered to the low and unscrupulous enumerators. He closed his remarks by as serting that St Louis contained over luO.UMU oiils if it contained a single man.

51ore Complaints. HOW Till: WORK IS 1 XK St. Louis, June JO, IsSO. A census enumerator called at the store in which I sleep and asked if any families lived in the building. being told no he started out.

whtn I called him back and asked hiai what he Avantcd. He stated his business, aud I gave him my ow and my room-mate's name. There are hundreds of places here he could ask if any families lived and be told no, and yet several persons sleep in the building. And n-" doubt thousands have been missed in this way. 1 he man that called at my place had very little idea ot his duties, and it he asked the same question at other business houses hi list is doubtless very imperfect.

Every block should be gene over again. Yours, 11. A KRATOIt. It is positively known that most ot the time ne was pretending to take the census he was in a saloon near Fifteenth street and Lalayette avenue.
