iA New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung Sunday, Octobers, 1982 NFL talks Players hint at possibility of mediation WASHINGTON (AP) Talks aimed at ending the 12-day National Football League Players strike broke off Saturday with no resumption in sight. But the union said that if owners came to the bargaining table, the players would consider mediation. For the third consecutive day, both sides emerged from the talks angry and frustrated, and accusing each other of responsibility for prolonging the strike. Jack Donlan, chief negotiator for the owners, said flatly that he saw no way talks could continue without an outside mediator, a concept the players have consistently refused in the past. "We're at a terrible impasse," Donlan said "We've asked them every way we know how publicly and privately for mediation.

We obviously need a third party." This time, union negotiator Ed Garvey stopped a bit short of refusal. He said that if club owners appeared at the table with their designated negotiators, the players would consider consenting to a mediator. "We want the owners to meet with their full committee and our full committee for two days at a neutral site," Garvey said. "If that doesn't Work we'll entertain a proposal for a mediator. Otherwise, there was more of the same sort of acrimony that marked the two previous days of negotiations here.

And the net result was that a third weekend's 14-game schedule was very much in jeopardy from the strike, which began Sept. 21. Donlan said he had no idea when talks would resume and Garvey said: "we were interrupted in midsentence by them rushing out the door when we asked when we could Since they're the ones who broke it off, I guess the next step is up to them." Garvey followed Donlan to the podium to say: "I can't think of a single issue they took up with any seriousness today," Asked if mediation was discussed, he replied: "They (the owners' negotiators) rushed out the door so fast, we never got a chance to bring it up." The breakdown of talks here appeared to doom the Oct. 10-11 regular-season games, the third weekend to be affected by the strike. Garvey, executive director of the union, said prior to the start of Saturday's session that next weekend's games would have to be scrapped if a settlement wasn't reached "by Monday at the latest." Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner, felt the games could still be salvaged.

Asked about Garvey's comment, Rozelle said from his office in New York: "I don't know if I agree with that. I don't want to put any pressure on the negotiators. We will have todecide before Thursday." Earlier this week, Donlan sent a message to the 28 club owners saying two weekends could be made up, but no more. On Saturday the two sides met for an hour, the headed for their separate rooms again for two and a half more hours. College football roundup Pitt squeaks past W.

Va. PITTSBURGH (AP) Dan Marino's 8- yard pass to Julius Dawkins with 3:23 left to play capped a two-touchdown rally in the final 11 minutes that lifted second- ranked Pittsburgh to a 16-13 victory Saturday over No. 14 West Virginia. Bryan Thomas' 3-yard run with 10:52 remaining capped an 82-yard drive and began Pitt's comeback from a 13-0 deficit. Before that, West Virginia had things its own way as linebacker Darfyl Talley set up a field goal with an interception and recovered his own blocked punt for the Mountaineers' only touchdown.

West Virginia's Paul Woodside kicked field goals of 34 and 29 yards in the first and third periods, his 14th and 15th in a row, while Pitt's Eric Schubert had a 32- yard field goal attempt blocked by middle guard Jim Merritts and was wide on a 47- yarder as the Panthers' offense had problems for the fourth game in a row. Nevertheless, unbeaten Pitt survived for its fourth victory, while West Virginia suffered its first setback in four games. The Mountaineers have not defeated their archrivals since 1975 and trail the series 52-22-1. Notre Dame 11, Mich. St.

Johnston had field goals of 33, 29 and 42 yards all in the second quarter and the Notre Dame defense sacked Michigan State quarterback John Leister in the end zone for a first-quarter safety to account for all the Irish scoring. Ralf Mojsiejenko, whose booming punts kept Notre Dame in poor field position most of the game, kicked a 50-yard field goal in the third period for the lone Michigan State points. LSU 24, Florida 13 GAINESVILLE, Fla.

(AP) Freshman tailback Dalton Milliard scored three touchdowns, two of them on pass plays covering 41 and 3 yards, as Louisiana State stunned fourth-ranked Florida 24-13 in Southeastern Conference football action Saturday. A Florida Field crowd of 73,152 was silent as quarterback Alan Risher hit his first seven passes for 127 yards and moved ahead of Bert Jones as LSU's all-time passing yardage leader. LSU, 3-0, scored the first three times it touched the ball en route to a 17-3 lead, settled for a 24-5 halftime advantage and then used a rugged defense to turn back numerous Florida threats after intermission. Nebraska 41, Auburn 7 AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Turner Gill fired a 58-yard scoring strike to break a second- quarter deadlock and Mike Rozier added a pair of second-half touchdowns as eighth- ranked Nebraska overpowered No.

20 Auburn 41-7 in an intersectional college football clash Saturday. Gill's long touchdown pass came with 3:32 left in the first half and went to Todd Brown, who made the reception at the Tiger 20 behind Auburn defender David King. The victory was the third in four games for the explosive Cornhuskers, who came back from a last minute 27-24 setback at Penn State last week. Rozier scored on runs of 2 and 12 yards to cap a pair of 57-yard Cornhusker drives in the third and fourth quarters. The Cornhuskers took a 7-0 lead on their first possession in the game, driving 73 yards to score on Doug Wilkening's 15- yard run.

Nebraska added two touchdowns in the final IV-i minutes, the first when reserve Mark Schellen raced 41 yards on a sweep around right end and the second with less than two minutes remaining on a 13-yard run by Tim Brungardt. Freshman Vincent "Bo" Jackson got Auburn's only touchdown late in the first quarter on a 4-yard sweep when he hurdled a defender at the goal-line and did a head- over-heels flip into the end zone. Georgia 29, Miss. St. 22 STARKVILLE, Miss.

(AP) Herschel Walker rushed for 215 yards and quarterback John Lastinger passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead sixth-ranked Georgia to a 29-22 football victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. Defensive guard Kevin Jackson preserved the regionally televised Southeastern Conference triumph, plucking quarterback John Bond's fumble from the air at the Georgia 18 with left as Mississippi State sought to rescue victory. Walker, the junior AH American, carried the ball 39 times while increasing his career yardage to 4,009, moving him into second place on the all-time SEC rushing list, only 26 yards behind Louisiana State's Charles Alexander. Georgia, 4-0, scored the winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter with a 65-yard drive capped by Lastinger's 1- yard keeper. Walker picked up 55 yards on eight carries in the drive.

Oklahoma 13, Iowa St. 3 AMES, Iowa (AP) Keeling kicked two field goals and the Oklahoma defense made several key play as the Sooners continued their mastery over Iowa State with a 13-3 victory Saturday in the opening game of the Big Eight Conference football race. Keeling, who kicks barefoot, booted a 22- yard field goal at the end of the first half to give Oklahoma a 10-3 lead and added a 34- yarder at the start of the fourth quarter following an Iowa State fumble. Stanley Wilson scored the only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run late in the first quarter, capping a 92-yard, 17- play drive on Oklahoma's first possession. The Sooners, who ran extensively out of the I-formation instead of their traditional wishbone, struggled offensively after that but the defense kept Iowa State at bay.

Both teams are 2-2 for the season. Oklahoma has not lost to Iowa State since 1961.
