CATHOLIC CHURCH By Father Kemper Tivy's Partner When Captain Tivy was out- first mayor in Kerrville, he donated much land for the school named after him. His partner in the surveying job was Edwin Graves, a graduate of Notre Dame University. Mr. Graves also surveyed for our Notre Dame several acres of city subdivision in San Antonio which property was recently sold to meet needs of our parish 'school. His namesake, Edwin Graves Rowley, was a senior at Notre Dame University when he was killed by an auto ns he crossed the highway separating the college grounds from the girls' college on the banks of the St.

Joseph River. This highway runs from Detroit to Chicago at the old Indian blockade, Fort Dearborn. It is called the Michigan Boulevard, or Dearborn Highway, and in Congress at Washington, D. was known as "the Father of American Highways." Father Richard niso established the first western newspaper, and from his pioneer printing press he produced the first Bible west of the Allc- ghanies. Auto DC nth Monday of this week, November 20, was the silver anniversary of Rowley's tragic accident.

In memory of his only son, Mr. Rowley made several large donations in which our Notre Dame became implicated. Rowley had organized the Knights of Columbus in Mexi- so, and their Alhambra degree work in Texas. In San Antonio he helped to build the K. C.

Hall near Romana Plaza. While he resided in Kerrville on Bulwcr Street, he purchased the K. C. building stock owned by our parish. The Bulwcr family was related to him and of course their branches: Kaiser, Kuesel, Dunne and old Kerrville residents.

Another kinsman was Father Hcffcrnan of Handera at that time. Hcnncssy Park Rowley was married to a niece of Father Hcnncssy in whose honor a city park is named in Houston. The nuptial rites were read by Rev. Christopher J. Smith 0.

M. I. who was one of the first priests to officiate in Kerrville, and during his tenure of office Father Smith founded in Kerrville the Archdioccsan weekly now known as "The Southern Messenger." GNOTR Dflm STITUT J. T. WILLIAMS Plumbing and Heating Contractor YOUR LICENSED MASTER PLUMBER 513 Schreiner Street Phone 791 Thanksgiving Day -1950 By the President of the United States A PROCLAMATION In keeping with the custom established by our forefathers and hallowed by faithful observance throughout the years, it is fitting that once again at this season we set aside a day for giving thinks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us.

We are deeply grateful for the bounties of our soil, for the unequaled production of our mines and factories, and for all the vast resources of our beloved country, which have enabled our citizens to build a great civilization. We are thankful for the enjoyment of our personal liberties and for the loyalty of our fellow Americans. We offer fervent thanks that we are privileged to join with other countries in the work of the United Nations, which was founded to maintain peace in a troubled world and is now standing firm in upholding the principles of international justice. Contemplating these blessings with humility, we have a deepened sense of our responsiblity to serve unselfishly and we pray to Almighty God for wisdom in our relations with our fellow men. Now, therefore, I Harry S.

Truman, President of the United States of America, in conf ormance with the joint resolution of Congress approved December 26,1941, designating the fourth Thursday of November in each year as Thanksgiving Day, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 23,1950, as a day of national thanksgiving, and I call upon every citizen to offer thanks to God for His gracious guidance and help. Again I ask all my countrymen to appeal to the Most High, that the God of our fathers who has blessed this land beyond all others will in his infinite mercy grant to all nations that peace which a world cannot give. I entreat them, in church, chapel, and synagogue, in their homes and in the busy walks of life, every day and everywhere, to pray for peace. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington this nineteenth day of October in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and fifty, and of the independence of the United States of America the one hundred and seventy-fifth.
