Jim Jacobs, Fight Manager, Dead At 57 By FRKI) McMANK UPI Assistant Sports Kditor NEW YORK (UPI) Jim Jacobs, co-manager of heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and once the world's top-ranking handball player, died Wednesday of pneumonia at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 57. Jacobs, who had been hospitalized for three weeks, had suffered from chronic lymphocydic leukemia for the past nine years. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and two sisters, Dorothy and Helen.

Services were set for Friday at 2 p.m. PST in Culver City, Calif. In partnership with Bill Cayton since 1960, Jacobs also co-managed Wilfred Benitez and Edwin Rosario. A member of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Jacobs, who became a millionaire businessman, owned the largest collection of boxing films in the world (about 26,000 stored at Big Fights, Inc. of which he was vice president).

He also had a collection of 500,000 comic books. "I always wanted to have the greatest collection of fight films in the world," Jacobs told UPI in an interview several years ago. "I wanted to be the greatest handball player in the world. I wanted to own the most comic books. I wanted to be a millionaire.

Handball helped me achieve those goals. My partner, Bill Cayton, and Cus D'Amato, manager of former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, took those energies that I had given to handball and re-directed them to business." Born Feb. 18, 1931, in St. Louis, to a middle class family, Jacobs took up handball after reading a story in a magazine about Vic Hershkowitz, a legend in the game. In what Jacobs described as "the climax of a long and arduous journey," he defeated Hershkowitz and won his first national championship at the age of 24 in 1955.

Jacobs won every match he played in United States Handball Association singles and doubles competition from 1955 through 1969. He was the fourwall doubles champion six times, four-wall singles champion six times, three-wall singles champion three times, twice the AAU champion in four-wall singles and six times one-wall singles champion. The latter is a phase of handball competition which is limited to a small but highly skilled group of players in Brooklyn and Miami. Jacobs, who became a millionaire businessman, was elected, along with 17 other Jewish athletes, into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Los Angeles in 1979. Aside from his USHA career in organized handball competition, Jacobs was a frequent visitor to YMCAs and athletic clubs around the country.

In such games, "sporting wagers" are often placed and "hustlers" are commonplace. In such an atmosphere, it was inevitable that Jacobs occasionally would be the intended victim of some "hustler" to Jimmy's amusement and the hustler's dismay once the game started. "I always made it a policy to play down to my rivals in those games," said Jacobs. "If a guy was Class I played at the Class level. It was fun.

Once, though, this guy told me I might develop into a Class A player if I learned how to balance myself on certain shots. He offered to show me how. Then he suggested that we play a game for a sporting wager. He was actually trying to hustle me. He didn't know who he was trying to hustle." Jacobs won the match, 21-0.

DUNEDIN, Fla. (UPI) Jose Oquendo drove in four runs, three with a bases-loaded triple, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 10-3 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Cardinals struck for five more runs in the ninth off reliever Duane Ward, who yielded his first runs this spring after making seven appearances covering 10 innings. PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (UPI) Gregg Jefferies singled home the winning run in the sixth inning to give the New York Mets a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in an exhibition game, then was sent to the minor leagues. Jefferies, one of the top prospects in the Mets' organization, was reassigned to Tidewater of the International League along with non-roster pitcher Tom McCarthy.

Left-hander Bob Ojeda pitched six innings for the Mets. BUGS' Diaz Has Surgery PITTSBURGH (UPI) Pirates outfielder-first baseman Mike Diaz Wednesday underwent surgery at Roosevelt Hospital in New York to repair a partially torn ligament in his left thumb, a team spokesman said. Diaz will be in a cast for four weeks and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks, the spokesman said.

Diaz injured his thumb in an intrasquad game in Bradenton, March 1 and had seen limited action this spring. 76ers Sign Henderson PHILADELPHIA (UPI) The Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday signed guard David Henderson to a contract for the remainder of the season. Henderson, who originally was signed to a 10-day contract on March 3 and then signed to a second 10-day deal, has averaged 4.1 points in seven games with Philadelphia. Henderson's second 10-day deal expired Wednesday and the 76ers had to sign him for the rest of the season or release him. ANNUAL FISH STOCKING Spring Training For buscbull fans, spring training represents the beginning of the new year.

It is a time when (hey scan the sports pages for reports on their favorite players and teams and try to get some fresh line on the upcoming season. The goals of spring training haven't changed all that much through the years. The main thing is to get in shape and get rid of the rustincss that comes from a four- or live-month layoff. In all honesty, players today are in a lot better shape than when I was playing. More players seemed to have beer bellies back 30 years ago.

But it still takes hard work to get in shape both physically and mentally for the new season. I had my first spring training in Waycross, where the Braves had their minor league camp. We had so many players in camp thai we had to wear big numbers like 115a" on our backs. The Waycross camp was crowded even though our Triple A team was training at Kissimmec. and the big club was at Bradcnton, Fla.

Remember, back in those days, major league teams had as many as 12-15 farm clubs. That's a lot of players. I enjoyed spring training for my first seven or eight years, but then it got to be real work. The older you get the tougher it is to pull yourself out of bed each morning. But you have to do it to get in shape.

Other than getting in shape, it is important to work on the liner points of the game. Although you may have been an excellent bun- tcr the year before, you should go to spring training with the intention of refining your technique. Every club has a different way of doing things. Much depends on the manager. He may have everyone working on different plays, such as the hit and run or hitting the cutoff man.

Every year it seems that some so-so team will get hot during the spring games and prompt articles on how they may be the surprise team of the year. Spring training won-lost records arc very misleading especially when it comes to good veteran ballclubs. They know what they have to do to get ready. As soon as the bell rings starting the new season, those veterans are going to turn it up a notch, and that hot, young team will settle back into the standings. I always went to spring training with the idea of doing the best I could.

I knew that if I had a good spring training I could carry that momentum right into the season. Ill Hank Aaron is (he top home run hitler ol all lime with 755 homers. PM Editorial Services Alaskans Shake 'Cabin Fever' In Bizarre Golf Games ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPI) OK duffers, forget those chintzy sand traps and casual water holes and get ready for icebergs, snowdrifts and mountains.

It's golf time in Alaska. After six months of winter, Alaskans will be shaking their cabin fever by taking to the icy seas and snowy mountains in bizarre games of golf. In Nome it's the Bering Sea Ice Classic, golf on the icepack. On Kodiak Island it's the Pillar Mountain Classic, golf up a mountainside. Both annual events are getting more entrants than ever.

"We're getting the golf season off to a good start," said Glenn Yngve, organizer of Kodiak's one-hole, par-70 course up Pillar Mountain that has attracted golfers from six states and Japan. The Bering Sea event drew 64 players who hacked across six holes laid out on the frozen waters Sunday, dodging iceberg chunks, snowdrifts, cracks and arctic winds as they shot brightly colored balls to 12-fpotsquare Astro-turf greens. Nick Brigman of Anchorage won with a record score of 24. Kodiak's Pillar Mountain Classic tees off Saturday morning at the base of the mountain for the alluphlll game. At the top is the lone hole a 5-gallon bucket shoved into the snow.

Saws for cutting away alder branches and shovels for digging out of snowdrifts are standard equipment, but no chain saws or other fancy motor-driven tools are allowed. Each player has two assistants a caddy to carry golf clubs, saws, shovels and winter gear, and a ball spotter. In addition to Kodiak Island's golf diehards, Yngve said there will be players from Palm Springs and Pebble Beach, from Hawaii's Kona Surf Country Club, and from Japan's Tomagawa Country Club.
