There are now 160 miles of shelves of books in the British museum, and about twenty more mile remain to be filled. Ex governor Osborn, ex-govenorr Anthony and ex-governor St. John expect to spend gie summer in our State. This is the ''ou" year in polities. We see that postmaster Millington, of the Winfield Courier, postmaster Slur-dock, of the Wichita Eagle, postmaster IVrry, of the Paola Republican and a half dozen other postmaster-editors who do not reside in this district, have something to say about our congressmen.

It is wonder ful witli what unanimity these federal pap-suckers eulogize the men who are in otlice. A new tire extinguisher has been invented which is not only cheap, but is pronounced a success. It is in the tnrm of a hand gienade containing a preparation, which, when thrown into a 11 utile, bleaks. The vaprr evolved extinguishes the flames. An exhibition in Tnpekn, Friday, before the State officers, wasmiile a success, and the Slate board of charities ordered a supply of grenade for all ihe charitable institutions in the State, the test, a large bon-Hiv was started hi a pile of pine haulier saturate wilh tar and coal oil, anil after being thoroughly ablaze all Ihrough, two liottles of tin; grenades were thrown into it and almo-t instantly extinguished the flames.

Our school is in a very flourishing cou- dition; W. E. McDonald, of El Dorado is the principal. The fault we have heard Mac find wasthat ladies were very scarce here; we are sorry this is so, for we would like to retain him another year. F.

Signs ol peculiar aud decisive changes were observed on the slender cieseui ot the present new moon. Au astronomer within the past ten days claims to have discovered something unusual going or. iu the fleal peak ot Tycho Brulie, a big mountain which has always been a prominent object on the eastern side ot the uioon. Tycho is a volcanic crater, nearly teet high and Ally miles in diameter, aud it iiad up to within a lew days a peak a miie higli, standing iu its cratei. This peak, which was only a blight spot iu the midst ol a black crater, has suddenly grown to be a giganiic mountain, nearly tilling the enure basin ot Hie crater and toweling aboye every otlitr mountain on the moon.

It is estimated now to be thrice as high as it was. and promises some startling plieuoiiicna. The moon lias been called a dead globe, but il its internal tires can give it any claims to life it is certainly a living cot pat. The sitrns of a renewal ol volcanic action, which began to be discussed a ntury ago, are bow not merely scieutilie nuts to be cracked by the astronomers, but tliey are claimed to be facts for the people.
