One member who declined to be identified said not being able to discipline members who crossed the line was like a child breaking a piece of your fine china, and then patting him on the head and Steve Lampher travels 120 miles round-trip, six days a week, to work in the paint department at Monon Corporation. Standing on the sidewalk with his wife, Karen, Lampher said he voted against accepting the new contract. "We're not out because we want to be. We're out because we want better working conditions," Lampher said. He was deeply concerned about overtime and safety issues.

"We've got too many hours on the job and one day off is not enough," said Lampher, who said he averages 50 hours a week and has worked up to 58 hours. A welder and union shop steward at Plant One, second shift, David Purkhiser missed the call. "I think it will fly with the membership, but it will be close," Purkhiser said shortly after voting inside the high school Monday. But the more he talked, the mole uncertainty he expressed. "If our membership hadn't crossed the line, we would have gotten a better package.

Those who crossed the picket line weakened the union," Purkhiser said. Noting that there had been no strike at Monon Corporation in the past 20 years, Purkhiser, who has been on the picket line every day since the strike started, blamed a Lot of the problems on inexperience. "They (some of the members) were not prepared in any sense of the word. They thought is was; a game and it's not a game," he The missed paychecks are being felt. "Financially I couldn't afford to strike," said Purkhiser, adding, "But I also couldn't afford not to strike.

We're not slaves. We can't be worked to death." Monon Continued From Page A1 Monon also made changes to its health insurance plan, limiting employees' total annual expenses and offering a prescription drug plan. Myers did not know when negotiations would begin again but said the union is ready to talk. "My feeling is the company doesn't want to negotiate," he said. "We're willing to talk about anything and everything." Agenda Tuesday, June 28 THE FRONTIER SCHOOL BOARD will meet in executive session at 6 p.m.

in the corporate office, 100 Main Chalmers. A public session will follow at 7:30 p.m. QBZA Continued From Page A1 The board approved a variance from developmental standards request by Realty Holding Company, allowing them to build closer to the property line and post a larger sign than ordinance allows. Joey Graves and Lisa Loesel, representing Auto Zone, requested the variance to keep 13 parking spaces in the lot that would have to be cut. There will be a total of 37 spaces, which the company considers a bare minimum.

The sign will be 50 square feet and will be illuminated from dusk to 9 p.m. The board voted to investigate raising its salary to $20 per meeting. Currently board members receive $10 per meeting.
