Press Writer LITTLETON Colo (AP) Two Columbine High School stu dents were found dead early today after a shooting at a sand wich shop about two blocks south of the school authorities said far as a LOUISVILLE (AP) Mandatory statewide garbage pickup and a plan to put deposits on beverage contain ers two legislative measures aimed at cleaning up Kentucky were strong ly favored in a recent poll The Bluegrass State Poll pub lished in The Courier Journal on Sunday shows that 62 percent of those polled favor deposits on cans and bottles And 63 percent said they favored mandatory trash pickup for all counties the poll shows The poll surveyed 800 Kentucky adults between Jan 31 and eb 6 Its margin of error is 35 percent The poll results pleased House Democratic loor Leader Greg Stumbo of Prestonsburg Stumbo sponsors a bill that would require 5 and 10 cent refundable deposits on many kinds of beverage containers one of the most hotly contested issues of this legislative session and faces a critical vote on Tuesday before the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee a true epic battle as to whether the people will win what they want or whether the special interests are going to win in this leg islative Stumbo said The bottling industry challenged the result of the poll Industry critics have lobbied the General Assembly and aired television ads statewide opposing the measure Michael Brown a Pespi Cola Bottling Co executive in Louisville and president of the Kentucky Beverage Industry Recycling Program said there is no guarantee people will be able to conveniently redeem their deposits The bill only requires one redemption center per county The bill has three main provisions: deposits on beverages a quarter cent sales tax on beverage cups and wrap pers sold at fast planned a robot craft was on target today to become the first spacecraft to orbit an aster oid in a Day rendezvous with a space rock named for the Greek god of love Mission officials said the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous or NEAR spacecraft' was set to auto matically fire its thrusters and settle into a 124 mile orbit of the gray pota to shaped rock called Eros Thrusters were to fire automatical ly this morning Eros is so distant from Earth that it takes 14 12 min utes for a radio signal confirming the rocket firing to reach NEAR mission control If successful the spacecraft will
