A2 1HL ADVOCATE SSrNGr nWrDNrSDAY DCI MUI 11 1996 Sale of Harrodsburg building to furniture builder nearly complete By Ann Harney Staff Writer spend about $30000 in improvements on I lie building within the hrst six months The monthly payment will be $1650 with a bid loon payment at the end of 8 l2 years Morris director of the llarrodslmrgMercer County Industrial Development Authority said earlier this year that he number of workers had been higher in previous years of Cricketeer produe HARRODSBURG Sale of the old Cricketeer building is almost compete "We expect the Cricketeer sale to be consummated sometime between now and the first of the year" said Harrodsburg City Attorney Tebbs Moon The buyer is Robert David and the sale Pt ice is Moore said the sale was contingent upon coordinating the transfer with the current lessee Joseph 1'eiss oi Icveland The value of the building had been appraised at $310000 at least a year ago The building is owned by the city and the sale negotiations have been conducted by the Harrodsburg City Commission most ly behind closed doors was tin1 last of several public offersmade on the building since Cricketeer closed David owner of Robert Michael urnishings of Long Beach Calif told the City Commission in January that he would con struct furniture building and would guarantee the employ ment of 20 people within the first two years of production He also told the commission early this year that he hoped the number of i workers would be 40 by the end of two years and it was his inten sion to hire between 50 and 80 people within four years When Cricket eer ended production in the 33000 square foot building in May 1902 there were about 300 employees Larry tion Morris declined to comment today on the sale although in the past he said he thought more jobs should be guaranteed Commissioner Joe Hood was the lone member of tbu board to vote against the sale in the only vote taken on it in March Hood still opposes the sale and the way it was handled commission wanted to sell it and 1 had one Hood said lie said he had contacted the Cabinet for Economic Development and officials there recommended the city pul a price on it based on tin number of jobs the buyer would provide "As the number of jobs comes down the price goes up" was the way Hood explained the concept today "1 wish the best for this man 1 hope he does well with it" Hood said but added be thought the city could have gotten a better price with a business providing more jobs selling it at about the time the bypass is going to be fin ished and 1 think going to increase the value tremendous he said "I saw opportunity and possibilities evidently the rest of the commission see I see it as a white elephant we needed to gel rid Moore said today that the agreement with David was more of a land contract than a deed and that it did not require David to provide any specific number of jobs David will bo required to Moore agreed with a statement by Hood that David could walk away from the deal at any point without completing the sale Moore said the city would get the property back and keep what David had paid up to that point Commissioner James Moseley asked Moore who was responsi ble for the building since the lease had expired Moore said Joseph eiss still held the lease and he would look into who was insur ing the building today In another matter Moore explained that Patrolman Keith Smith had been charged with conduct unbecoming an officer aiftl Commissioner Jack Springate suggested that Smith be suspend ed from the Harrodsburg Police Department without pay for two weeks and placed on probation for four months The probationary period Moore said would be just like thaLfor a new employee except benefits would continue to accrue during the period Neither Smith nor any city official would comment on the grounds for the charge The commission held a closed door hear ing on the charge against Smith on Dec 3 but took no vote on the issue until Tuesday night Smith was originally suspended on Nov 27 and therefore returned to work today 3 Start Photo by Troy Anderson 1 nI iL Xx i I 1 corners: Richard Penman of Lincoln County
