creationist museum to open near a well known fossil site The museum would be only four miles from internationally known Big Bone Lick State Park which has deposits of bones from mam moths and other animals that scientists say roamed this part of the world 20000 years ago The proposed museum has drawn controversy in part because it would portray the Earth as being only 6000 years old and would contend the dinosaurs were aboard Ark The national Answers in Genesis organization is seeking the zoning change to build the muse um and an office on a portion of 97 acres it plans to buy at US 42 and Kentucky 338 The office would house a mail order opera tion The lorence based group wants to rezone 40 acres from agricultural to recreational use and in addition to the museum probably place its headquarters a mail order operation and ware house on the site Commissioners Irene Patrick and Shirley Meihaus questioned whether the commercial operation would fit into the surrounding area of homes and horse farms got to be compatible with the area and that area is agricultural" Patrick said classi fy that (proposal) as a business" Meihaus raised the same issue certainly have concerns mostly about the warehousemailing she said is major commercial in this rural setting and com patibility is certainly an issue in any zoning request It has presented a lot of concerns that! need to be dealt with before we have a positive vote on i Commissioner Harold Campbell comment on the proposal except to say it is the most controversial project dealt with as commissioner Boone County Judge Executive Ken Lucas also discuss the proposal The first phase of the project would be'ti 12000 foot building to house the museum andi administrative offices The warehouse operation would take up about 3000 square feet officials say Eventually the operation would have three buildings totaling 59000 square feet Answers in Genesis leaders say only about five acres of the property would be developed The remainder would remain green space Answers in Genesis spokesman Mark Looy said the project would preserve the natural beauty of the area now the land is zoned for 50 homes dr trailers and I think that a better alterna tive than a large development like that would create much more traffic more noise and higher cost for the county than our proposed Looy said The Boone County Planning Commission in hj 9 4 vote recommended in October that the rezon 1 ing be approved after setting numerous condi tions including limiting hours of operation Tqc the museum and dictating that the designs' iff the buildings blend in with the countryside Packets on college aid available ree packets of higher education planning materials and financial aid information are now available to help Boyle County
