Geneva opera house turns 100 By Bennett J. Loudon Staff writer GENEVA Crack open those scrapbooks. Dust off the trunk in the attic filled with the stuff your grandparents couldn't bear to throw away. You may have something squirreled away that could help supporters of the Smith Opera House draw a more complete history of the theater. As part of the celebration of the landmark theater's centennial year, staff and volunteers are writing a book on the history of the theater and planning an exhibit of memorabilia.

Steve O'Malley, curator of the Geneva Historical Society's Prouty-Chew Museum, has volunteered to help collect and organize the memorabilia for the exhibit. Charles McNally, an English professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will write the book. Yesterday and Saturday, O'Mal ley and McNally were at the Smith accepting donated or loaned items. They also photographed and copied items with which owners could not part. They even recorded former patrons' and employees' memories of the theater.

"Some of my family store away things and I found it and I thought you ought to have it," 87-year-old Margaret Stevens told O'Malley and McNally Saturday as she dropped off a program from a 1925 show called White Colors. "Oh, I knew that man," she said as she noticed an old photograph of a band that played for many Smith shows in the early 1900s. McNally picked her brain and discovered the identities of several men in the photograph the type of information that will make his book more thorough. Robert and Arleane Bardeen dropped by with a copy of a program from Arleane's mother's 1909 Geneva High School graduation ceremony, which was held at the Smith. "The thing I remember most about the Smith was when I came out of here in December one time and they were hollering an extra edition of the newspaper," said Robert Bardeen.

It was announcing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. "We've got the facts and we're looking for the color," O'Malley said. "It's the personal experience that could add to the dry facts Whatever happens, we'll still write the book, but a book is kind of colorless without it," he said. McNally said that over the past several years he has collected a lot of material that will go into the book, which should be published in the fall. "I wrote a lot of what I knew already and I have big spaces to fill in with whatever we get here or with some more research," he said.

A few of the big holes in the Smith's history are the years 1906, 1914 and 1918 through 1920. There doesn't seem to be any record of any performances at the Smith during those years. Today the Smith presents live entertainment about 20 times per year and first-run movies on weekends. The Finger Lakes Regional Arts Council, owner of the Smith, is about to kick off a fund-raising drive to pay for restoration of the theater, which could cost as much as $2 million. "There was a car coming at me, and then a car behind it came around it. Now he was in my lane coming right at me at 70 mph." Rochester police said Brantley was driving with a revoked license. The registration on the car was suspended due to lack of insurance. Brantley's mother, Alice, said the circumstances surrounding her son's death were not important because they wouldn't change the result.
