Popoli, Robert A. Actors saddened when show closes The Associated Press ALBANY When Joel Aroeste danced down the yellow brick road as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz yesterday, he was reprising a role he had monopolized for 18 years. Perhaps for the last time. Barring action by the state Legislature in the next few weeks, yesterday's show was the last for the New York State Theatre Institute, a troupe that has combined performance with education since 1974. Funded through the State University of New York, the Institute is losing 75 percent of its $2 million budget, a cut members say will kill the theater.

Yesterday's matinee performance was a farewell. After an energetic two-hour show complete with flying monkeys, good and evil witches, munchkins and tornado, the cast came out for a bow, cut off the orchestra's exit music, and told the near-sell-out audience what the theater had meant to them. "I started playing (the Lion) it when I was 23 years old, and it landed me in an incredible theatri Seneca Nation gets part The Associated Press SALAMANCA Each member of the Seneca Nation of Indians over 18 years old received $2,000 from the nation this weekend, part of the $60 million payment the nation received to settle past inequities in lease payments for land it owns. New York chipped in $25 million of the settlement, and Seneca Nation president Calvin "Kelly" John received the first of three annual payments of $5.4 million during a trip to Albany on Friday. "This was meant to be imple Shooting brings tales of love triangle cal experience," Aroeste said in a dressing-room interview before the performance.

Aroeste, now 43, had just received his degree in theater from SUNY Albany when a group of theater professionals from Moscow invited his student company to the Soviet Union. They performed The Wizard of Oz. The group's success abroad led to continued performances in this country, and to the Legislature establishing them as a state-funded troupe in 1974. The Theatre Institute, with a corps of 59 actors, technicians and support staff, has done about five productions a year, with an emphasis on children's theater. During the school year, the company has traveled to schools and invited classes to the state's egg-shaped theater near the state Capitol.

"The whole concept was to use theater as a means of teaching curriculum," said Institute spokesman Ron Nicoll. "It could be a math or computer class, or geography or social studies." Students who think computers are boring were excited to find out that computers control lighting and sound in a modern theater, he said. One group of students studying mented and the state and federal governments have lived up to their obligations," he said. The money came under the Seneca Nation Settlement Act signed in 1990 by President Bush. In addition to the payment for past inequities, the act provided for the renegotiation of leases that, in the past, had been as low as $1 a year.

Almost all of the city of Salamanca, about 75 miles south of Buffalo, is on Seneca land and lease payments had been governed by a 99-year master lease that expired this appear almost daily in New York City newspapers. Fisher remains in the Nassau County Jail held on $2 million bail. Her lawyer is trying to raise the money by selling the tale of sex, violence and deceit to inquiring producers, directors and screenwriters. Lawyer Eric Naiburg said twenty offers were fielded and the hopefuls are down to 10. He hopes to spring his client in the next week.

The women in this made-for-TV drama are yin and yang. Mary Jo Buttafuoco is a blond suburban housewife with two children, married for more than a decade to her high school sweetheart. Her husband runs his father's auto body business and has a boat, Double Trouble. A videotape from a party last year shows Mary Jo Buttafuoco dancing and laughing with her husband, the picture of happiness, living out the American dream. Fisher wears her auburn hair long.

She used it to cover her face after her arrest. She seemed to have everything, but a prosecutor said she worked as a call girl, wearing a beeper to class so her customers could reach her any time. A videotape shot by a man who said he was her client shows a nude man hovering over a dark-haired girl, who friends said is Fisher. It Duckies estimated that more than 300 laparoscopic gallbladder operations have been done at Highland since the fall of 1990. He noted that surgeons are not allowed to perform the operation until they have completed a three-day course and have assisted on at least 12 other laparoscopic gallbladder operations.

A Park Ridge Hospital official told The New York Times that the statement it had received was not related to problems with surgical technique but to the incomplete filing of reports regarding the surgery. In New York all hospitals must report unusual incidents to the Health Department or be penalized. Michael Coniff, president of the committee. "That's why we're taking an attitude that we're not going to give up." Although the bank is leaving, Coniff said there are signs that businesses may be reinvesting in the area. Tent City, for example, is in the middle of a major renovation project which will add new products to the store, such as basketball and tennis equipment One of major components of the revitalization project will be the creation of a street-lighting enhancement district to reduce crime and promote safety.

The project, which will cost $16,000, will double the street lighting on Lyell between State and Broad streets, at an additional cost to merchants of about $20 a year. The project will be the first of its kind in any commercial section of the city, said Larry Stid, the city's planning director. Stid said Lyell and Jefferson avenues were added to the commercial enhancement district program after city officials helped merchants in the two areas revise their proposals immigration acted out their own Ellis Island scenario, with the help of Institute actors. Most of the kids played immigrants trying to get permission to enter the country, while a small group sat behind a desk asking questions in a private language they created and that the "immigrants" couldn't understand. The Institute has also taught acting, hosted a summer theater program for underprivileged children and trained interns in behind-the-scenes theater skills.

The troupe's members call themselves "public servants" and say they were challenged by the combination of acting and teaching. "If I were working in another theater, I'd be pigeonholed," Aroeste said. "Here I was able to play all sorts of different roles. It's been a wonderful growth experience. I'm not just out there promoting my own career." This year, the SUNY system, struggling to handle the cuts that hit all state departments, decided to reduce the Institute's budget from $2 million to $500,000.

All but 13 of the Institute's staff have already been laid off but were rehired as temporaries to finish the run of Wizard. The remaining members say of payoff year. The city of Salamanca has balked at making its new lease payments. City officials have said Salamanca residents want to renegotiate. The City Council is withholding $751,313 in 1992 lease payments.

John said he hopes the city will "realize the situation and consider working along with us to improve the economy." About 5,000 Senecas, most of whom live on reservations near Salamanca and Gowanda, will receive the payments. was broadcast by the TV shows A Current Affair and Hard Copy. Fisher is an only child who had some run-ins with her parents, the middle-class owners of an upholstery store. In 1991, her father filed a missing person report after his daughter ran away, saying she was uncontrollable. One month before her high school graduation, Fisher was arrested for attempted murder in the wounding of Mary Jo Buttafuoco.

Fisher had spent the previous months stalking her, obsessed with eliminating her rival for her lover's affections, authorities said. Steven Sleeman, 21, who claims Fisher recruited him for an earlier plot to kill Mary Jo Buttafuoco, called Fisher "a nice, pretty girl too much in love with an older guy." Naiburg, her lawyer, agreed. "The core of this kid is good. Something went terribly wrong," Naiburg said. "There may be things that are true as to what she did, but they are subject to interpretation." Naiburg's interpretation: Joseph Buttafuoco was a manipulator who became her pimp.

Marvyn Korn-berg, the lawyer representing Buttafuoco, ridicules that version. "If you believe that story," he said, "I have a bridge for sale that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn." If further investigation shows evidence of violation of state standards for care, the department can issue a statement of deficiency, a plan for corrective action and a fine. To reduce the hazards, the Health Department issued guidelines Friday specifying that surgeons must perform at least 15 la- Earoscopies under supervision efore a hospital may issue credentials permitting them to perform the operation independently. In most hospitals in the United States, laparoecopy is rapidly replacing the traditional operation among the 500,000 Americans who undergo gallbladder surgery each year. for revitalization so that they encouraged business development.

"Basically there was a lot of hard work by the merchants in the areas in putting together the programs," Stid said. "They had evidenced a lot of serious thought in making their districts function better." The Jefferson Avenue Coalition will use $6,000 of its allocation to hire a city architect who will design facade improvements for businesses in its district. Another $5,000 will be spent on advertising. "The victory here is that we finally achieved something, and now we've got something and we can go from there," said Michael Gibbardo, chairman of the Jefferson Avenue Coalition. Other districts approved for the program last month are: La Aven-ida, or North Clinton Avenue; North Street; North Goodman Street; South Avenue; and West Main Street.

The commercial enhancement district program was a key recommendation in the $74,000 neighborhood study conducted by Hammer, Siler, George Associates, of Silver Spring, Ma, last year. FL 33B7 1 Love for man links very different women The Associated Press NEW YORK There are differences in age, family, lifestyle, looks. Amy Fisher and Mary Jo Buttafuoco had but one thing in common: They both loved Joseph Buttafuoco. Mary Jo Buttafuoco's love for her husband got her a bullet in the head and Fisher allegedly put it there in a May 19 showdown on a suburban front porch, authorities said.

The case grabbed the public consciousness, giving 15 minutes of fame to Fisher's high school classmates, the Buttafuoco's neighbors and a call girl patron's grainy home video. Joseph Buttafuoco, 38, is at the center of a "he did-he didn't" debate over his relationship with Fisher, 17, a high school senior.
