if ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH TUESDAY EVENING, JULY 30, 1918. 10 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH PERSONAL Ilia mm g0 WITNESSES TESTIFY FOR STEPHENS IN BANK SWT Banker, Insurance Man and Broker Appear Before Referee, Jacob I- Jtablr. Republican National Committeeman; J.

D. Terry J-Yancis, broker, and Benjamin F. J'dwards, president of the Central National Bank, gave depositions today in behalf of former Gov. Lon V. Ftephens, in the Buit tiled against Stephens and others officers of the Central National Bank of Boonville, Mo, by stockholders, who charge them with negligence.

The suit was an outgrowth of the, bank's failure. Stephens was vice president of the bank at the time it was closed in October. 1916. The depositions were taken by Referee Forrest C. Donnell in the office of Henderson Marshall, in the Central National Bank Building.

The witnesses were called in order to show that Stephens was not, as is lleged in the suit, indifferent to the hank's interests, but that he looked after those interests diligently. Babler, who is vice-president of the International Life Insurance testified that the company made deposits in the bank in Boonvtlle, as a courtesy to Stephens, who was a stockholder in the insurance com pany. Whenever tho balance in the bank at Boonville would get low. he paid, Stephens would come in and urge that more money be deposited. "We got so we would shy when we brw him coming in," Babler raid, "for it would mean a request for more deposits at Boonville." I'Yancis said that the brokerage firm of Francis, Brother Co.

bought and sold bonds of a value of 100,000 for the Boonville bank, and that all these deals were made through Stephens. Edwards, who was formerly president of the National Bank of Commerce, testified that the Bank of Commerce was St. Louis correspondent for the bank in Boonville, and that Stephens took a personal interest in all the business transacted hero in behalf of the Boonville institution. "Whatever negotiations were undertaken here, he paid, were through Stephens. St.
