GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1995 5-B COLLEGE FOOIBAH Iowa finds its day in the Sun Hawkeyes avenge Rose Bowl losses, blast Washington 38-18 The Associated Press EL PASO There was no Rose Bowl repeat for Iowa this time. After twice being brutalized in Pasadena by Washington, the Hawkeyes got a measure of revenge Friday as they cruised to a 38-18 Sun Bowl victory over the misfiring Huskies. "They just kicked our butts," said Washington coach Jim Lambright. Iowa (8-4) opened the game with a three-and-out series. But the Huskies fumbled the ensuing punt, giving the Hawkeyes new life on their own 42.

One play later, a 58-yard run by bowl MVP Sedrick Shaw, they were up 7-0 and on the way to scoring 21 unanswered first- half points. The victory was the first for Iowa in three postseason contests against Washington. Washington beat the Hawkeyes 46-34 in the 1991 Rose Bowl and then blanked them 28-0 in the 1982 game. "It was like we got the breaks, which we didn't get in the two Rose Bowls against these peo- ple," said Iowa coach Hayden Fry. The Hawkeyes seized control of the game behind their running backs, rolling up 421 yards.

Shaw finished with 135 yards and a touchdown and Tavian Banks had 122, and Michael Burger ran for two TDs. The Huskies (7-4-1) struggled throughout and never seemed to be able to click. Lambright even pulled quarterback Damon Huard, the school's career passing leader, and replaced him with Shane Fortney, who had completed only four passes during the regular season. Huard finished 14-of-26 for 194 yards. Fortney went 5-of- 11 for 56 yards.

"I think he (Huard) had a little bit of trouble trying to figure out exactly what defense we were in," said Iowa defensive back Tom Knight. Washington also fumbled three times, leading to 13 first- half points for Iowa, and suffered a safety on a bad snap on a punt attempt. Brion Hurley and Zach Bromert combined for five field goals to set a Sun Bowl record. Washington quarterback Tony Parrish (7) is sacked by Iowa's Aaron Klein (90) and Bill Ennis-lnge (9) in the second quarter of the Sun Bowl, iowa won the game 38-18 Friday in El Paso. (AP) Bromert kicked field goals of 34 and 33 yards and Hurley, who comes in on the longer attempts, connected from 50, 49 and 47 yards.

Washington did show some signs of life late in the game as a returning Huard threw for TDs of 20 and 3 yards. Fortney also had a 30-yard TD strike. All three 2-point conversion attempts failed. A fumble by Fred Coleman at the end of a 19-yard pass reception set the stage for Hurley's 49-yard field goal with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter, increasing Iowa's lead to 10-0. Moments later, Washington's Ernie Conwell snapped the ball over Jeoff Prince's head on a punt attempt, sending the ball sailing out of the Washington end zone for a safety that upped Iowa's edge to 12-0.

Bromert's 33-yard field goal with 6:13 remaining in the first half extended the Hawkeyes' lead to 15-0. He added the 34- yard field goal less than three minutes later, upping the Hawkeyes' advantage to 18-0, to cap a drive begun on the Huskies' 31 after Jared Devries recovered Rashaan Sheehee's fumble. Hurley added another field goal with 35 seconds remaining to put the Hawkeyes up 21-0. LSU blasts Michigan State for Independence Bowl title The Associated Press SHREVEPORT, La. In a game filled with big offensive and special teams plays, it took the LSU defense to finally break the Independence Bowl wide open Friday.

Gabe Northern's 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown put LSU up by 11 points with 9:20 left in the third quarter. Less than a minute later, Allen Stansberry's interception set up another score and the Tigers, in their first bowl game since 1988, went on to beat Michigan State 45-26. Freshman Kevin Faulk rushed for an Independence Bowl record 234 yards and scored two touchdowns. His 5-yard score on the second play of the third quarter gave LSU (7-4-1) the lead for good at 28-24. Michigan State (6-5-1), like LSU completing its first year under a new coach, had seven turnovers.

The two in the third quarter beat them. Three plays after Stansberry's interception, true freshman quarterback Herb Tyler hit Eddie Kennison for a 27-yard TD play and the Tigers had extended the lead to 42-24. Kennison also set a bowl record with an 92-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. He held the record only 13 seconds before Derrick Mason broke it with a 100-yard return as the two teams traded touchdowns twice in a 93-second span of the second quarter. Michigan State's Derrick Mason (80) sprints for a long gain after a catch while Louisiana State defenders Chris Cummings (19) and Blaine McCorkle (56) give chase during the first quarter Friday at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.

(AP) kickoff at the 8, cut back right near the 30 and sped past kicker Chris Gardner's last chance attempt at a tackle to the end zone for a 14-13 LSU lead. At the other end, as a football flew out of the stands beside him, Mason burst up ther middle for his 100-yard return and another record. LSU tied it back up when two plays later when Faulk ran 51 yards for a touchdown, getting a downfield block from receiver MOVIES12 A MALL OF THE MAINLAND 1-45 Emmett F. Lowry Expy. Shaddrick Wilson.

Michigan State led 24-21 at halftime after Gardner kicked a 37-yard field goal with just one second left. The game, sponsored by Poulan-Weed Eater, got off to a quick start. It was tied 7-7 after just three minutes. Michigan State's Tony Banks hit Muhsin Muhammad for a 78-yard TD on the second play of the game. LSU then drove 80 yards in seven play.

Southern fends off Rattlers The Associated Press ATLANTA Eric Randall threw for two touchdowns, one covering 68 yards to Melvin Williams, and Southern Univer- sity survived a late comeback to beat Florida 30-25 in the Heritage Bowl on Saturday. The Jaguars (11-1) stretched their lead to 30-11 on Randall's second scoring pass of the day, a 6-yarder to Fred Bailey with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Mario Allen then rallied the Rattlers (9-3), connecting with Robert Wilson on a 66-yard TD pass less than a minute into the final period and capping a 49-yard drive with a 2-yard scoring run with 5:21 left. FAMU, which dropped a 5238 decision to the Jaguars in the Georgia Dome in November, forced Southern to punt and Lionel Nicholas hit a 51-yarder to put the Rattlers on their own 16. On the first play, Rod Deamer intercepted his second pass of the game at the FAMU 37, allowing the Jaguars to run out the remaining 1:29 and preserve their No.

1 ranking in the Sheridan Poll for historically black colleges. Randall completed 16 of 25 passes for 190 yards. The long pass to Williams opened the scoring and Southern quickly stretched the lead to 100 on Carlos Lach's 43-yard field goal following Deamer's first interception at the Rattler 31. Southern built the lead to 170 when Williams scored on a 5- yard run just over five minutes into the second quarter. His score was set up by Ricky Arvie's recovery of a fumbled punt by Tremayne Bridges.

scored a safety 6:10 before halftime when John Jenkins snapped the ball over Nicholas's head and Nicholas kicked it out of the back of the end zone. Scott Greene, one of four Michigan State starters who missed the first quarter as penalty for missing curfew this week, scored from 3 yards out on his first carry- Greene's 17th TD of the sea- son was set up by Carl Reaves' interception and 17-yard return on the first play of the second quarter.
