Indiana Report Indianapolis Is 3rd Largest State Capital WASHINGTON (UPI) the ninth largest city in the nation, has replaced Boston as the largest capital city, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The latest population figures show Phoenix with a population of 853,266.

Boston, which led the nation's captial cities in population until the 1980 census, has a population of 570,719. Boston drops to fourth in the ranking of most populous capital cities, behind Phoenix, Honolulu and Indianapolis. Bill Murray, a statistician with the Massachusetts Data Center, said Boston lost residents to suburban areas of the state in the 1970s and early 1980s, but that 1984 census figures show the exodus from Boston has slowed and some people are returning. Murray said many people still think of Boston as the largest of the nation's capital cities because it is centered around a strong downtown area, unlike in the West. "The comparison of a city in Arizona to Massachusetts is really difficult at least psychologically, they are so different," he said.

Renumbers Two Roads In Logansport Two new state highways have been added to the city of Logansport during the past month, but most motorists probably didn't even notice.

The reason is the Indiana Department of Highways has given parts of two existing highways brand new numbers. Ind. 29 from the flashing yellow lights a mile south of Logansport to Third and Market streets downtown will now be known as Ind. 329. In addition, the section of highway known as old U.S.

35 from Main Street and Burlington Avenue east to the new U.S. 35 Bypass will be known as Ind. 435. James Schmidt, the highway department's traffic engineer for the LaPorte District, said the changes were made to reflect points where bypasses actually begin and end. Old Ind.

29, which originally ended at Third and Market, was officially extended with the completion of the new U.S. 35 Bypass. Ind. 29 now ends at the junction of the two U.S. 35 bypasses southwest of the city.

The changes officially took place in September, 1984, and appear on the 1985 Indiana Department of Highway maps, but highway crews did not post the new signs until last month. Now, when motorists pull up to the intersection of Burlington Avenue and Main Street, they may do a doubletake. Instead of Ind. 29 and U.S. 35, the signs now indicate the streets mark the junction of two different highways altogether Ind.
