DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. ROCHESTER, N.Y., TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1992 Upper Deck dives into minor leagues with 350-card set More than six decades after it was built, Silver Stadium added an Upper Deck this year. Unfortunately, you'll find it on the outfield fence. PLAYING FOR KEEPS The Upper Deck card company, which released its fourth set of major league cards this year, is making a move into minor league baseball with a 350-card set that will include at least one member of the Rochester Red Wings. And unlike some of the older card companies that never seemed to put money back into the sports that fed them, Upper "I "wmmm" Hifmg-y www i pi mm nationally recognized company like Upper Deck and its powerful marketing machine behind them.

Up to now they have been a tough sell, even in the last couple years when Pro Cards, a Pottstown, company, has concentrated on producing and marketing them with full page color ads in demo-graphically perfect Baseball America. Pro Cards will be producing a full Rochester Red Wings set again this year, as will Impel Marketing, which will produce its Line Drive set of the Red Wings for the second year. Nobody knows the frustrations of trying to market minor league sets any more than WGRC sports director Bill Pucko, who produced 15 sets, mostly of New York-Penn League teams. The last ones were produced in 1990. "It was a lot of work," Pucko said with a sigh yesterday when asked if he missed doing it.

"Really, no. I would have liked to continue, but once it was over, it was over and I really didn't miss it. It was fun while it lasted, though. I had some good conversations." One was with a Utica pitcher who gave his home address to Pucko and asked him if he would send some of the cards home when they came out a month later. "I asked him why he wanted me to do it and he said, 'I don't figure to be here Pucko remembered.

"He said, 'My arm's so sore, I can't throw a And he was right. In his career, he pitched two games for an inning and a So Upper Deck settled for the distance markers on the outfield fence. If you want to see the ads and you are a youngster, Upper Deck has made that easy for you, too. "They're sponsoring the Upper Deck Kids Club, which is a little bit like the knothole gang," Mason said. "If kids bring two foil wrappers from the baseball cards and take them to the ticket office, we'll give them an Upper Deck Kids Club card, which will get them into every Tuesday game during the season." Obviously that doesn't include this afternoon's 12:30 p.m.

start, since school is in session. But there are 10 other Tuesday night games on the schedule. For the collectors out there, you'll probably want to mark Thursday, July 16, on your calendar. That's the day Upper Deck gives you something for nothing at Silver. "They are going to be giving out baseball card holders with two cards in them to the first 2,500 fans," Mason said.

"Each one will have a Brien Taylor card and a Frank Rodriguez card in it." The cards of the two hot minor league prospects will be promotional cards for the minor league set. And while the promo craze has died down from the crescendo it hit at last year's National at Anaheim, the first Brien Taylor Upper Deck minor league card should be a nice collectible. It'll be interesting to see just how well minor league cards do with the clout of a third with the Utica Blue Sox back in 1988." Minor league cards have never done much more than the Utica pitcher. But now that could change. "I figured it was just a matter of time before one of those major companies took a jump into that market," Pucko said.

"An interesting concept. I guess I like it. I probably shouldn't, but I still love minor league cards. "If they are making a card set of that size, they are using some judgment as to who is getting in that set. If as a Red Wings fan you care about who's big in the minors, this is going to help sort it out for you and give credibility to it." A retired producer like Pucko can sit back and enjoy watching players from his sets become parts of major league sets.

He can count 13 of his New York-Penn players now in the major leagues. Among them are Randy Tomlin, who is 4-0 with the Pirates, and Met rookies Todd Hundley and Anthony Young. Show time As part of an Irondequoit Mall sports card show this weekend, three Red Wings will be signing free autographs on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They are Bobby Dickerson, Mike Lehman and Ken Shamburg.

Frank Bilovsky's Playing for Keeps column appears in the Democrat and Chronicle on Tuesdays. Address all questions and comments to 55 Exchange Rochester, N.Y. 14614. FRANK BILOVSKY Deck is pouring some money back into baseball at all levels. It sponsored a tour of old timers games last year.

This year, it is spending money advertising in the majors and the minors. It took a full page ad in the Red Wings program. And it looked for an unusual place to advertise its product at Silver Stadium. "By the time they contacted us (in November), all our outfield signs were sold," said Red Wings director of promotions and group sales Dan Mason. "They wanted to buy the on-deck circles, but we decided we didn't want to sell them." CARD OF THE WEEK Don't ask us why this card No.

54 from this year's Wild Card Basketball set exists. It shows former Jefferson High (Class of '83) and Niagara University (Class of '87) star Joe Arlauckas in action with a foreign team. On the back it lists Arlauckas' statistics at Niagara. But it neither identifies the team for which he is playing in the picture, nor the reason why he would be included in a 1992 set. Doesn't matter, though.

When a guy from Rochester makes a nationally distributed 120-card basketball set, it's news for us, even If we don't understand why. LAS VEGAS LINE Gannett Ntws Service (Honw team CAPS) Favorite fastball i1 ffl a a a i Baseball: 12:35 p.m. Syracuse at Roch. 7:30 p.m. Rangers at Yankees 7:30 p.m.

He's never had one misplace a saddle, either. After Arazi left the competition standing still at the Breeder's Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs last November, he returned to France where he remained until crossing the Atlantic last weekend. Contrary to popular opinion, the much-hyped Arazi didn't walk from Paris to Louisville; he took a plane.

Many, though, feel the precocious 3-year-old may win in a walk Saturday. Wilson, sounding very much like a football owner who has seen his share of bad bounces through the years, isn't so sure. "So many things can happen," he says. "All I know is that if he is fit and sound, he is going to be awfully, awfully tough to beat He's the best horse I've been around, and I've been around thousands of them." "I loved studying bloodlines, things like that," he says. "In fact, I probably enjoyed the breeding part of it even more than the competition." One of Wilson's horses Patrick McGroder competed in the 1974 Kentucky Derby, finishing ninth in a field of 23.

Another horse, West Coast Scout, won six $100,000 races for him. Three years ago around the same time his Bills were making headlines for their bickering Wilson reluctantly sold most of his stable at an auction at Keeneland's Racetrack in Lexington, Ky. "The football end of my business was taking up much more of my time than it used to," he explains. "It got so I didn't even have the time to see the horses I bred run." Among the thoroughbreds he unloaded was Arazi, whose bloodlines can be traced to the great Northern Dancer. Allen Paulson was the buyer, and he shelled out $350,000.

Today, ownership of the horse is shared by Paulson and Sheikh Mohammed bin Ra-shid al Maktoum, of Dubai, the defense minister of the United Arab Emirates. Several months ago, the Sheikh offered Paulson $5 million for his share of Arazi. Paulson turned him down. Although he sold most of his horses, Wilson still owns several members of Arazi's family. He says he will remain involved in the breeding end of the business, but he will treat it more as a diversion from the.
