The Evening post in Hs copyrighted financial review, 'though the trading on, the Stock rvphance once more ran beyond a mil-f tnares the fifth consecutive full Snei of the sort-the trend of Prices was not uniformly upward. In the early hours, there were abundant signs of heavy profit-taking sales, and prices even of the leading speculative stocks fell back at times 1 to 2 iints There was a new buying move-Sr'nt nn each of these reactions, how-Mrr and in the final hour, as usual in a market of this character, the bidding-un process was converged again on stocks whose action could be reckoned on to affect the general market." "At the close, therefore, the market's appearance was that of positive strength, though the net changes of the day were irregular.

There was nc change whatever in the dominance of professional speculation. though naturally the sight of million-share days' with advancing prices, had its usual effect on the more speculative outside public. "The iteel shares, which nuns back in the earlv market, were again made the stalking horse of the final trading and even Bethlehem was mished to the front. "No attention was paid to the news of the day, such as it was. Exchange on Berlin went a fraction lower; on Paris the rate was considerably more favorable.

Election a Factor. "Less was heard of the Maine election as a potent influence on financial sentiment and a propelling force cn values. This was in spite of the fact that the voters of that State possibly not conscious of the extent to which their action, in the eyes of Wall street, would obscure the New-York street car strike and the European war were dropping their ballots into the box today. Tomorrow, we may know to what extent, if at all, the campaign committees and the fctock Exchange enthusiasts have misjudged the prophetic Qualities of the Stat. 'The truth appears to be that both have confused the September election in Maine, which has rarely been an accurate foreshadowing of November, with the September election in which for unknown reasons has always been an absolutely unerring forecast of the national results.

Vermont's September State election has been abolished, and as Maine alone is left the presumption seems to be that the mantle of Elijah 50 St. Loui3 Chicago 25 H1 110 N. North. Pac Pac. Mail Penn.

Sent. II. Wheat prices developed considerable strength today, owing to the absence of selling pressure. The surrender of the Rumanian fortress of Siiistria appeared to have a tendency to make the bears cautious. Then.

too. world shipments were lighter, and there was a decrease In the total stock on hand in Great Britain. Welcome rains In Kansas, however, led subsequently to a reaction. Opening prices, which ranged from decline to a rise of c. were followed by a substantial general upturn, but most of the gains failed to hold.

Lack of export business acted later as a weight on the market, and so too did a lessening of demand from millers. A decrease In the United States visible supply, however, caused a sharp rallv. The close was unsettled. "He to lvc higher; with December at $1.54 and May at $1.55. Fine weather for maturing the crop brought about an additional setback In prices, but the market then rallied somewhat with wheat.

The close was nervous at lc to lc net decline. Cor weakness as a result of assertions that the Illinois crop had of late made a wonderful improvement. It was said the entire State would be safe from frost by th-i first of October. After opening Vic to lower, the market underwent a decided sag. Oats "sympathized with wheat.

The depression in corn, though, finally became more than an offset. Lower prices on hogs turned provisions down grade. Selling was especially liberal in October lard. Sausage Meat sausage Meat With Liverpool cables 2d to 3d lower, prof essionals looked for an easier tone tn the local wheat market today. But after swinging slightly over, then fractionally under Saturday's close, trade settled into a rut slightly favoring the bulls.

In the finish hour the market gained strength on a sharp decrease in the domestic -visible supply. The close was Arm and about lc over Saturday's finish. Receipts showed a tendency to increase in the Northwest, but the winter wheat movement is light, and the total primary figures were well below last year. Some selling came from pit traders on the theory that the crop situation, as a factor in the market, had temporarily lost its, force, owing to the news being "all out," while the foreign political situation might, at anytime, develop something of a bearish character, especially relative to the opening of the Dardanelles, which would mean shipments of Russian wheat to Europe. Argentine statistics were bearish, and Broomhall reported the weather favorable in the southern country.

Broomhall's Liverpool cable was bearish in tone. It said: "Wheat opened quiet and inclined lower, with easier feeling in spot and larger import arrivals.
