Eighteen faculty members at Washington University were granted leaves of absenci yesterday to teach and conduct research at other universities during the 1953-54 academic year or to serve as consultants for government and other organizations. An additional 27 have been granted leaves for military service.

Three department heads were granted leaves. They were Walter Leighton mathema tics, who will work with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Baltimore; Milan S. LaDu, romance languages, who will do research in medieval languages In France from February to June, and Phillip De-Lacy, classics, who will complete preparation of five Plutarch essays here and at the University of Chicago. Mrs. Elizabeth Bacon, assistant profesor of anthropology, will study the Hazara Mongols in Afghanistan.

George Warner Swenson associate professor of electrical engineering, will teach at the University of Alaska and serve as consultant to the Geophysical Institute of Alaska. Jules Henry, associate professor of anthropology, will teach anthropology at the University of Chicago. Two faculty members have won Fulbright awards. They are Aaron Rose, associate professor of chemical engineering, who will lecture at the University of Nancy, France, and conduct research on unit operations there, and J. Edward Kidder assistant professor of art and archaeology, who will study at the University of Kyoto, Japan.

Ford Foundation fellowships have been awarded to four faculty members. Robert Hackford, assistant professor of political Science, will study methods of teaching international relations at various universities In the Midwest. Saul Levin, assistant professor of classics, will study preservation of knowledge of language in Chicago and New York. Henry Schaerf, associate professor of mathematics, will Investigate mathematical methods of statistics In this country and abroad. James B.

Watson, associate professor of anthropology, will study the attitude of Papua and New Guinea natives toward western civilization. A Guggenheim fellowship has been awarded C. Harvey Gardiner, associate professor of history, for a biographical study in Mexico City of Martin Lopez, Shipbuilder for Cortez, Spanish conqueror. Jules Henry, associate professor of anthropology, Will be visiting associate professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago while conducting research there. In addition to the 27 faculty members on leave In the armed forces, five School of Medicine staff members will be on duty with the United SUtes Public Health service through next academic year.

AIR FORCE LOWERS OVERSEAS TEACHERS' QUALIFICATIONS Qualification standards for teachers applying for overseas duty with the Air Force Department have been lowered because of the need for more teachers, It was announced yesterday at Scott Air Force Base.

Persons have a teacher's certificate, a bachelor's degree and two years of teaching experience or a master's degree and one year of experience may apply. Experience must have been gained in the past three years. Age requirements are 23 to 43 years old for women, 23 to 55 for men. Salaries start at $4205 a year and transportation and living quarters are furnished by the Air Force. Persona selected must sign an agreement to stay overseas one year.

Interested persons should submit Standard Form 57, Application for Federal Employment, to the Civilian Personnel Office, Scott Air Force Base.
