Despite a late burst of buying interest in steel and motor shares, closing prices were under the day's best marks in most cases. The main body of stocks made a little headway in the face of heavy opposition, with gains limited to fractions for the most part. Selected TV issues ran up one to around three points. A number of low-priced stocks also made a showing, as well as 'a couple of shares affected by special developments. I Trading was heavy from start to finish.

Sales of 2,710,000 shares compared with 2.590.000 yesterday. Of 1139 issues totaled 573 closed up, 324 down, 240 unchanged. Associated Press average of 60 stocks closed up .1 of a point at 76.2. The market surged ahead around midday, paced by the volatile TV division. Large-scale profit taking later lopped off the widest gains.

Western Union was again in demand following' yesterday's jump ot ZVa points to 21Vz. American Cyanamid put on a solo act with a rise of more than five points at one time following announcement of an excellent earnings report for the first quarter. Also ahead were Armco, United States Steel, Bethlehem Steel, General Motors, Studebaker, Dow Chemical, duPont, American Can, and Santa Fe. American Telephone turned in a losing score. Rubbers and oils were also inclined to be balky.

The startling strength showed by Western Union. was something of a puzzler to Wall and to officials of the company as well. Factors that might have stimulated buying included: A recent disclosure by the company that the company's earnings In March were the largest in two years anc that the profit statement for the first quarter will be one of the best in some time. Earlv buying in soybeans came trom cash and shipping houses, presumably representing lifting of hedges against sales of cash beans to the Government. After that, the distressed shorts helped along the rise bv covering their commitments. May and July corn made new seasonal peaks, too. Wheat jumped more than a cent on continued lack of moisture in the southwest. Oats firmed and even rye Joined in the advance.

Firmness in cash markets helped corn and oats. The nearby wheat deliveries were aided by continued movement of red wheat nut nf this market, which once was a drag on price" but now is becoming quite scarce. More than 80 cars have been Ehipped from here this week. MERCHANTS' EXCHANGE. April 21 Grain futures range: High.

Bid prices slid 1-32 and 2-32 of a point at the opening, but in later over-the-counter trading, some of the extreme losers reduced the decline to 1-32. A few pulled up to yesterday's closing bid price levels. In United States Treasury bond trading Victory Loan of 1972-67 were quoted at 101 23-32 bid near the close, unchanged from vesterdav's close.
