500 Pairs to Be Closed Out Lower Than Ever. ST A ST. LOUISA H. Missouri's Ex-Labor Commissioner Will Write the Campaign Gospel on Tariff. New York, Aug.

25. The Democratic Sub-Committee on Literature of which Joslah Qulncy is chairman has at last decided on the man who Is to get up tbe tariff chapters of the campaign text book. This is the last selection to be made and a long list of names was canvassed before the floal selection was made and at last Lee Meriwether, ex-Labor Commissioner of Missouri, was chosen. Mr. Meriwether, the committee thought.

Is specially fitted for this work as he has but Just returned from a long tour through the highly protected countries of Europe, where he made a special study of the tariffs and their effects upon labor. Mr. Meriwether's observations have been gathered Into a book now on the presses of Scrlbner's. Many of the facts of this book will find a preliminary lodging place in the campaign text book. To a Post-Dispatch representative be said: "From my study of the question and from the examination of the highest authorities, I am satisfied that protection while Increasing tbe cost of living does not increase tne laborer's wages.

I propose demonstrating this In the text book by Incontrovertible and abundant authority, lam going to show also the price the American people pay for protection, and Included In that snowing will be the recipients of the excess price paid on account of high tariffs. "One feature I wish to give special attention to Is tbe moral aspect of protection. I wish to show that protection has a tendency to lower the standard of morals and as the lion. Benjamin Butterworth, a good Republican, once put it, "The statements of the beneficiaries of protection cannot always be relied upon. "Another point I shall endeavor to make clear Is that wages are higher In the United States than in England, because of the greater effectiveness of our worklnumen and not because of the tariff.

This petition can be proved by showing that the waxes of American labor were blgher than those of English labor In our so-called free trade period, vis. from 1846 to the war. Mr. Meriwether, who Is assisted by Mr. S.

H. Angellof New Yor city, an expert on the tariff, has offices In the Reform Club, Tw enty -seventh ana Fifth avenue. bTILL IK SESSION. 'SQUIRE KATE" AT THX OLYMPIC. A Fine Performance "The Charity Ball" on Saturday Evf nlng-. Last night Robert Buchanan's play of "Squire Kate" was presented for tLe first time In St. Louis by Daniel Frohman's Lyceum company. Tbe play Is called a pastoral drama by the author, bat has many characteristics of tbe melodrama, especially in the last act.

The manner in which it was handled speaks admirably for the general and Individual excellence of the Lyceum company. Georgia ay van took the character of Squire Kate, and in It treated the passionate and pathetic parts In a manner that caused the audience to applaud en thuslastlcally. As Gaffer Klngsley Mr. W.J. Lemoyne was In uls element, and his rendition of tbe part was considered by many to be the most str'klng feature of the performance.

Herbert Kelsey as Geoffrey Doone. Miss Lffle Shannon as Kitty Thorpe, and E. J. Hat-cilffe as George iieatacott all did excellently. "Squire Kate" will be repeated this evening.
