In a race seen as crucial for Republicans to make inroads into the Democratic-controlled Assembly, incumbent 132nd District Democrat Joseph Morelle easily defeated James Hartman in a low-key contest, 31,129 votes to 19,894. "I received overwhelming support from all over the 131st District," John said. "The people agreed with the approach I have taken." Logel, 50, blamed her defeat on the Demo cratic enrollment edge in the district and the What the state Assembly does The Legislature is the legislative branch of New York's government. Chief among them was the abortion issue, which helped catapult John to an upset victory over Logel and longtime incumbent Assemblyman Gary Proud two years ago. Logel, 50, charged that John was creating a "gender war" by concentrating her time during her first term in Albany on women's issues.

John, an ardent abortion rights supporter, defended her record in Albany and said she had servative Party candidate James Nagle an incumbent who lost the Republican primary bureaucracy. Legislators are paid a basic annual salary of $57,500, although many of them earn additional pay for leadership posts. They also are paid for expenses on state business. and Conservative candidates. Despite his caution, Gantt, 51, of 245 Lynd-hurst St, soundly defeated Conservative Mario C.

Mazzullo, 75, of 560 West Side Drive in Gates, and Right to Life candidate Deborah E. worked on a number of issues that affect more than just women. John is one of 22 women serving in the state Assembly. Among her major accomplishments was an anti stalking bill that increased the penalties for people convicted of repeated harassment received 8,202 votes. Nagle, 64, of 89 Kirk-lees Road, Pittsford, represents the old 135th District He has served in the Legislature for 16 years.

135TH DISTRICT James Alesi defeats Matheis in landslide Staff reports Republican County Legislator James Alesi has become a state Assemblyman, winning by a more than 2-to-l ratio and sweeping all five easteide suburbs. Alesi, who vastly outspent Democrat Henry Matheis, won the 131st District seat by 18,601 votes. Alesi got 35,845 votes, Matheis got 17,244 votes and Right-to-Life candidate Mary Catherine Bosner received 2,067. Alesi ran on both the Republican and Con He narrowly lost a bid Johnson last year for Pittsford Town Board. Johnson lives at 54 Vt Mill St, Nunda, Livingston County.

I32nd DISTRICT Morelle easily wins 2nd Assembly term Staff reports Joseph D. Morelle overwhelmingly defeated Republican challenger James M. Hartman last night to win his second Assembly term in Albany. Morelle, a 35-year-old Democrat, won 33,723 votes, or 60 percent of the total ballots cast. Hartman, a lawyer who ran unsuccessfully for state Senate two years ago, received 21,196 votes.

Maureen A. Madonia, a 48-year-old Right to Life candidate who lives at 115 Valley View David Gantt registration assistance and extending registration deadlines to open up the voting process to as many people as possible. He said he plans to propose in the Assembly moving Election Day to a weekend so that more voters can participate. 137TH DISTRICT Albion board member will succeed Hawley Staff reports ALBION Charles Nesbitt, an Albion Town Board member, won election to the 137th Assembly District last night Nesbitt defeated Democrat Ted Swiercznski, 21,798 to 12,689. Donald Walzer, who stopped actively campaigning after losing servative lines the district which is 45 percent Republican, 27 percent Democratic and 25 percent independent Alesi, who defeated incumbent Assemblyman David Van Varick in a GOP primary, will represent residents of East Rochester, Penfield, Per-inton, Webster and Victor.

Nesbitt 44, like Swiercznski, 59, of Gaines, favored Medicaid reform and tighter controls on state spending. 136th DISTRICT Johnson boots out incumbent Nagle Staff reports Nunda Town Supervisor Gerald "Jerry" Johnson, who stressed the need for "new blood" in the state Assembly, was elected yesterday to represent the 136th Assembly District Johnson, 50, a Republican, received 23,846 votes. His Democratic opponent banker Richard Walsh of Pittsford, got 14,169 votes. Con to $500 million.

Meanwhile, Robach campaigned on a strong pro-business-and-industry platform. He wants to loosen what he calls excessive state occupational-safety requirements. He said he was a middle-of-the-road Democrat who reflected the views of his largely.
