Frminrrinim OFFICE AND SALESROOMS OF THE criminals of the South know that no investigation will be made when suspicion is thrown on a negro. No opportunity will be given a black man. The real criminal has only to lead the mob, nor rest content until the man he has accused Is dead.

Thlt is what we mean by white men making scapegoats of the negro. "I will tell you the story of one lynching which I have investigated and which fully covers the point. On July 4 of last year two white girls named Ray were found murdered near Bardwell, Ky. The bodies lay In a clump of brash within calling distance of their home. The father of the girls had been Instrumental In securing the conviction and sentence of two white men to prison for the murder of a white woman.

As no clue could be obtained they decided that a negro was the murderer. Bloodhounds were secured and the country was scoured. A bine coat was found near by. The hound followed the trail to the Ohio Klver and jumped Into a ferryman' boat. The dog was ferried across the river.

The trail was again found and followed to the cottage of a white farmer about 100 yards from the river. The dog refused to go further. "In the meantime a negro was arrested in Missouri who refp.sed to get off a Irelfht train on which be was steailnsr a ride. His name was Miller. Three gold rings were found on his person.

The people decided that he was the negro wanted at Bardwell.
