Dempsey and Ellingnwerth Matched. Bv Telegraph to the Post-Dispatch. New York, May 8. Joe Elllngsworth received the following telegram from the Southern California Athletio Club last night: Joe Ellingtworth: Come as agreed. Wire us the day you start.

The match is between Joe Ellingsworth and Jack Dempsey, not the Marine. Los Angeles, Mav 7. Ellingsworth told a reporter yesterday afternoon before the telegram arrived that he had word from Los Angeles that LaBlanche had broken his contract with the Southern California Athletic Club and had engaged with the California Athletio Club of San Francisco to fight Mike Lucie. The club assured Joe that they would stick to their part of the agreement and that they would find a man in his class to light him. Ellingsworth at the time said the man would be Jack Dempsey, whom he offered to meet before the Nonpareil left for the slope.

N.ow he is to have his wish. Joe will leave for California this evening or to-morrow morning. led to-day by the story that the Philadelphia club is determined to release Arthur Irwin, who has been its short die stop and captain since 1SS6. The conditions of the Derby are that the winner of anv 3-year-old stake race of the value of $2,000 shall carry five pounds extra, second horse to receive $500 and third horse 200 out of the stakes. Say there are twelve starters in the race, the twenty-nine declarations, at $10, and thirty-two forfeits of $25 each, with the added money of $2,500, would make the value of the stake This is one of the best Derbys, as far as money is concered, in the country, and a field of the size mentioned can safely be counted on to contest for it. Among the horses eligible are some of the best in the land.

Judging by this year's performances, the two California horses, The Czar and Don Jose, which are owned by Theo Winters, are entitled to first mention. Don Jose, who is by the celebrated racer, Joe Hooker, has shown himself to be a very worthy descendant of his great sire, having captured four stakes on. the Pacific Coast this season with splendid competitors. If he maintains his form and starts he will be a dangerous horse in the race. The Czar, a full brother to the Emperor of Norfolk, is fully as great a horse as Don Jose.

On April 24 he ran in the Pacific coast Derby at San Francisco and won in 2:36, the fastest time ever made in America for that distance. The best previous record was 2:362, madeby Ben AH at Louisville In 1866 and C. II. Todd in the American Derbv at Chicago in 1SS7. The Chicago stables will most likely depend on Viking, who was a good performer last year.

Of the small army of pedestrians who started in the championship race at the Madison Square Garden last Sunday night, less than twenty are still in the race. Cartwright, who has beensteadily leading, has now taken second place, having yielded to Hertv at 6 o'clock this morning when the scores of both were even. For an hour both pedestrians stuck to each other like brothers and made lap after lap in company until 6 o'clock when llerty began to lead. An hour later he was nearly two miles ahead. At 10 o'clock he held the lead by nearly five miles.

Hughes goes around the track at a steady lope and promises good things. Smith is running very stiffly, but holds fifth place. Hegtdman looks worried, but his friends promise that he will yet surprise the spectators. Glick looks fresher this morning than yesterday and Little Nolan keeps up a steady pace that runs up miles to his score like clock work. 11 a.

Yesterday the club officials notified him that he could have his release provided certain business arrangements were made. What these arrangements are, is between the club directors and Irwin. Yesterday Irwin sent a telegram to all the League clubs asking them to waive claims to his services. To the correspondent last night Irwin said: "Yes, this is my last week with the Philadelphia Club. I expect to be released in a few days.

I hope to get out of the League, and will probably join an Association club." Irwin refused to state what club he was in negotiation with and he would not deny it was the Athletics. The only thing he did say was "I believe if I had charge of the Athletics I could win the pennant hands down." I' Robinson Reinstated. "l' he trouble between Mr. Von der Ahe and Robinson has finally been settled, and the Browns have again settled down to playing ball. Mr.

Von der Ahe states that Comlskey came to him yesterday and asked for permission to settle the matter with Robinson. Mr. Von der Ahe says he gave him permission to do so, stipulating that the fine should be paid by Robinson. As a result of Comiskey's intercession Robinson played in his old position at second base yesterday and the club put up a remarkably fine game of ball. The second baseman alleges, however, that Comiskey came to him and told him to play, stating that the fine would not go.

However the settlement was made, it was a good thing lor the club. If the trouble had never occurred they would have had a long lead for the championship, but by cropping three games at Kansas City they will now have a hard tight for it. The manner in which the Athletics and lirooklyns beat Cincinnati and Louisville yesterday show that both the big Eastern teams are in the race. Yesterday's Games. The Browns had Robinson back at second yesterday and they defeated the Columbus Club by a score of 21 to 0.
