TGOLF Elks pro plays 216 holes for Salina leukemia victim By BOB DAVIDSON Salina luiiriml Rob Overgard didn't want to do much of anything but go home and go to bed.

"I'm very tired," Overgard, the teaching professional at Elks Country Club, said Monday evening after playing 216 holes of golf in 14 hours. Overgard embarked on the exhausting marathon to raise money for Salinan Rob Schorling, who is battling leukemia and needs to raise $120,000 to pay for a potentially life-saving bone marrow transplant. But Overgard knew sleep was still a ways away. "I'm going to go home, but I'm a big (Dallas) Cowboys fan they're the Monday Night game," he said. "I've got to watch them play, or at least try to." Overgard's selfless effort was profitable.

"If everybody gives to the full 216 holes, we'll make just a hair over $6,000," Overgard said. The initial goal was to play 150 holes in 18 hours. He bettered the hole goal, but fell short on time. "It's good that I did," Overgard said. "My (left) knee was about to give out.

When you swing through, your weight goes to your left side and you twist the knee. I've never had any problems before, but 14 and a half was all 1 could handle." Overgard rode a cart the entire day, but walked the last half of the 216th hole. He started the marathon at 2:45 a.m., Monday, using florescent balls. "At 6:30 (a.m.) I had 61 holes and had played 144 by 1:05 (p.m.)," he said. "I quit somewhere between 4:30 and 5." The 216 holes equate to 12 rounds of golf.

Schorling came to the Elks for a short time Monday to watch Overgard. "I'd never met him," Overgard said of Schorling. "He followed me for a couple of holes, but the weather was so cold he had to leave. His dad (Red) also came out and was with me for over a hundred holes." Overgard planned to go to bed as soon as the Cowboys-Giants game end- ed. But it was going to be a short night.

"The seniors tee off at 8 a.m. (today) and I've got to be here for that," he said. "But I'm not going to play golf," Another fund-raising tournament for Schorling is scheduled for Friday at the Elks the annual Jaycees' Hook and Slice Tournament. The tournament benefits the American Cancer society. "In light of the situation, the proceeds will go to the same cause," Overgard said.

Despite the fatigue, Overgard was pleased. "I'm tired, but I enjoyed it. It was very, very, very well worth it," he said. Swiftly, court upholds ban of Ben Johnson By The Associated Press TORONTO Ben Johnson remains an outsider in track and field. The star Canadian sprinter's hopes for one, more comeback were dimmed Monday when an appeals court refused to lift his lifetime ban for steroid use.

The ruling was made so swiftly that Johnson appeared stunned. Though 36, he still contends he could run world-class times if allowed to compete again. The decision comes practically on the 10-year anniversary of Johnson's startling run at the Seoul Olympics when he was timed in 9.79 seconds in the 100 meters but was stripped of his gold medal and world record. Johnson was suspended for two years after tes ing positive for steroids at the 1988 Seoul Games. The ban was imposed after a meet in 1993, when Johnson tested positive a second time for steroids.

A three-judge panel of Ontario's appeals court rejected Johnson's bid for reinstatement. Auto racing MOORESVILLE, N.C. He concluded that Belinda was in the early, stages of MS, a degenerative disease. i NEW YORK Cleveland's Manny Ramirez, who tied a major league record with eight homers! in five games, won the AL's player of the week award Monday.

Ramirez hit three homers on I Tuesday, two Wednesday, one Thursday and two Saturday to tie the mark reached twice by Wash- ington's Frank Howard in 1968. Howard hit eight; in a five-game span from May 12-17 and also had eight in the five games from May 14-18. In seven games last week, Ramirez batted .476 with a league-leading 10 runs and 18 RBIs. Basketball NEW YORK NBA owners and players dis cussed getting together for another bargaining session, but the idea was dismissed when the sides couldn't agree on the ground rules. Deputy com- missioner Russ Granik and players union presi- dent Billy Hunter both acknowledged Monday that talks aimed at ending the lockout could have re- 1 sumed almost a week and a half ago, though they differed on why such a meeting never took place.

Only one formal bargaining session has been held this summer, and the league is expected to begin canceling exhibition games later this week. Football PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas The marching bands from Prairie View and Southern University! were suspended from their next two football games Monday, two days after a brawl among the; musicians. The fight, which occurred at halftime during the schools' neutral-site game in Beaumont on Saturday, resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to instruments and uniforms. Both schools are investigating, but Southwestern Ath- letic Conference Commissioner Rudy Washington acted swiftly.
