Happy Valley 4 Club sold have arrived and the second shipment will be' ready to pick up today Poinsettias are a tradition around Christmas Their bright red bracts brighten any home and make the holiday more cheerful With proper care your poinsettia can last well into the new year and possibly longer Unfortunately the conditions in side the typical home do not favor the survival of the plant Poinset tias need a constant temperature of 60 to 70 degrees high relative humidity and full sunlight in other words greenhouse conditions Try to duplicate these conditions as much as possible Place the plant near a sunny window but do not allow it to touch the cold glass Avoid temperature fluctuations and drafts as well as heat outlets Root rot disease is more prevalent when the plants are kept below 60 degrees but plants kept in rooms with temperatures above 70 degrees will have a slightly shorter life span Proper watering is essential Over or under watering will cause trouble Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry to the touch or appears light in color Add water until some drains from the pot Remove excess water because this deprives roots of ox ygen and eventually will cause them to die As many people have found out poinsettias are difficult to rebloom It is not simply a matter of growing the plant until next Christmas you must have the pro per conditions and a patience When the plant has maturity and about half leaves and colored bracts have fallen off gradually reduce the amount of water until the soil is completely dry Store the plant in the pot in the basement or other dark room at 50 degrees Add enough water to keep the stem from shriveling but not enough to promote growth When new growth begins usual ly about May 1 repot the plant If PIC PRC SUPERMARKETS 4 show another 4 activity The fifth opportunity is printing Knowing how to set type and use printing machines computers and Make sure Christmas tree is fresh By EARL ARONSON AP Newsfeatures Among the questions asked as Christmas approaches are can I be sure getting a fresh cut Christmas Of course the best way to know you are getting a fresh tree is to cut one yourself at a tree planta tion but this always possible However there are a few simple tests you can make on an already cut tree to determine how fresh it is: eBend a needle of the tree If the needle springs back to its original position and shape the tree is fresh If it snaps or stays bent the tree is probably too dry Thump the base of the tree on the ground A shower of dry green needles indicates that the tree is too dry eel the cut end of the tree If the tree is fresh the base should I feel sticky and moist When you get the tree home remove half an inch from the bot tom and keep the cut end submerged in water this will help maintain the freshness Set the tree in a cool spot away heat sources such as direct sun hot air registers and TV sets to slow the drying process as much as possible lying on the rim LAS
