So she came over to the house the other night and said, "I understand with those machines you can break into other computers and tell them to do things." "It's not that easy.

Aunt Pauline," I said. "I know there are a lot of stories in the newspapers that kids have been doing it, and you probably saw WarGames. But you have to be awfully lucky with the code word before the other computer will talk to yours. Why do you bring up the subject?" "I want you to get into the Sears Roebuck computer and tell it I already paid for the slip-covers they keep billing me for every month." "That's a tall order," I said. "And while you're at it, give me a $50 credit for all the anguish and agony I've suffered trying to straighten it out" "I'll try," I said.

I turned on my machine and dialed into the system. Then I asked her, "What code word do you think they would use for people who don't pay their bills?" "Try DEADBEAT," she suggested. I typed in DEADBEAT. "Any luck?" she asked. "No, but I think I broke into the computer at the International Monetary Fund I better try another code name." "Wait! As long as you're in the International Monetary Fund why don't you cancel Mexico's foreign debt? I'm going there this winter and it would be nice if they weren't so worried about take $350,000 off Dan's salary and give it to Diane." "Dan will go up the wall when he gets his next paycheck." "Tough," she said.

"Someone has to strike a blow for equal pay between the sexes on television." "I've done it But we still haven't solved your Sears Roebuck problem." "Try the password SLIPCOVERS just for a long shot" I did and found myself talking to the U.S. Navy's master computer in the Mediterranean. When I told Aunt Pauline where we were she became very excited. "Let's give Colonel Kaddafi a bloody nose." "Now look," I said. "Giving Diane Sawyer a raise is one thing.

But I'm not about to start a war for the hell of it" "Your cousin Milton always said your Apple was all talk." "Look, I don't think we're going to break into the Sears Roebuck computer tonight and I could get in trouble for this." "Do me one more favor before you turn off your system. Get into the Social Security computer." "What for?" "I want to tell the girls at my bridge game how old Raquel Welch really is." Art Buchwatd's column appears Mondays, ART BUCHWALD money." "I can't just cancel Mexico's debt or the IMF books won't balance. I have to give it to another country." "So give it to Marcos. He deserves it for what he did to the opposition in Manila." "Okay. I just put Mexico's debt in the Philippine account.

Now Marcos owes the IMF $120 bilhon. Let's get back to Sears Roebuck. You have any other code words their charge people might ase?" "Try BLOOD," she suggested. "That doesn't seem to be it I just hooked into the Internal Revenue Service." "Good. Tell it to give John McEnroe a personal audit Maybe that will teach him to behave better on the tennis court." "Anything you say, Aunt Pauline.

Now let's feed in the password MONEY. Oh boy, now I've done it I just broke into the CBS payroll computer." "No kidding," Aunt Pauline said. "How much does Dan Rather make?" I typed the question. "It says $1,200,000 a year." She whistled. "Just for reading the news? How much does Diane Sawyer get?" "The computer has her down for $500,000." Aunt Pauline was furious.

I do it with all the age and a hot mitt tucked in the belt I know a lot of women who are as insecure as I am about entertaining. We're the women who put off having a few friends in until we get the sofa covered, the kids are married, the kitchen has new wallpaper, the toilet stops running, the big tree in the front yard blooms, oysters are in season, the an Democrat and Chronicle For convenient home-delivery call 232-5550 nual reports are out at the office, we get charm of a charging rhino. I do not have time for superfluous conversation like "hello" and "goodbye." The only time I mingle with my guests is when one wanders into the kitchen looking for the bathroom.

And my dinner partner remembers me as a blur. I honestly don't know how other women do it I do everything they do. Set the table the day before. Chop all morning. Have the dessert in the freezer.

The coffee pot ready to plug in. The main casserole draped in foil The moment the doorbell rings announcing the arrival of the first couple, I panic. A friend once told me the first recollection she had of meeting me was when she and her husband were invited to our house for dinner. The door swung open and as she extended her hand to me, I turned to my husband and said, "Check the hall bath. Make sure the boys flushed!" The problem is I am reluctant to let EREIA BOMBECK people see how we really live.

It's not easy being a phony. I want them to think that we always have fresh flowers from the florist on the dining room table. One afternoon, I picked a bouquet from the yard that made a breathtaking centerpiece. By the time the guests sat down to dinner the blossoms had tightened up into little knobs that looked like bait. "What kind of flowers are they?" asked one of the guests.

"They're African daisies," I said. "However, in Africa, they eat before the sun goes down." I want them to think we always serve soup from a tureen even though the price tag glows like it had a light over it I want them to think I always cook in something long and flowing even if it has a tomato seed lodged in the cleav CtlfllSTPM our tax refund, we ve seen the last of the roaches, or we get 12 iced tea glasses that match. My husband said the other day, "When are we going t' have some people in for dinner?" "I'm working on a big party with a theme and the timing has to be right" I said. "What's the occasion?" he asked. "Halley's Comet in May 1986." Erma Bombeck's column appears Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the People section.

Then he went away to college and I really missed him. My happiest times were when he invited me up for weekends and fixed me up with his pals, but I never liked any of them as well as I liked him. I'm in my third year of college rested development it will ruin your personal life and eventually destroy your relationship with your brother. Dear Ann Landers: Our 23-year-old daughter (pretty and smart) has been seeing a man who is totally unacceptable to my husband and me. We have kept our mouths shut, but now she is talking marriage.

Donohue. What do you suggest for swollen ankles? I am a woman over 80 with some arthritis. I exercise regularly and am active. I have had swelling on and off for several years, but recently it has become more of a problem, making it difficult to put on my shoes. L.D.M.

Let's look at some of the more common causes of ankle swelling. Heart failure is one. When the heart starts pumping weakly it doesn't empty itself of blood with each beat, so some of it backs up in the veins. When that happens, some of the fluid part of the blood leaks out into tissue. The lowermost parts of the body (ankles and feet) are the first affected.

Then there is the possibility of kidney damage. In that, the fluid part of the blood leaks out into tissues because not enough of it is being filtered into the urine. A third cause is liver disease. Less serious causes include varicose veins. Again, blood is pooling in the veins because of a local vein problem.

The lower leg is the common site for such defective veins. Also to be considered in such swelling is fluid retention, which sometimes happens to women during the menstrual cycle. Of course, at your age this would be ruled out I'm just scratching the diagnostic surface for you. I can't in truth, tell from a letter what might be causing such swellings. You mention (another part of your letter) use of sryies kcu.
