In the news department, CBS Evening News continued to lead the other networks in the early-evening slot with a 10.2 rating. NBC's Nightly Newt and ABC's World News Tonight tied with an 8.8 rating. The NBC spokesman said that in the 13 weeks since the end of the 1982-83 television season, NBC had averaged a 13.2 rating, inching into the No.

2 slot ahead of ABC's 13.1 average and behind CBS' 13.8 average. ABC also lost its long held spot at the top of daytime programming in the most recent ratings available. For the first time in almost four years CBS daytime beat ABC for two consecutive weeks those ending July 3 and 10. The top 10 programs for the week ending July 17, according to the A.C. Nielsen 1.

A spokesman for NBC called the ABC showing "the lowest for a non-convention week for any network in modern television history." ABC said last week was not a typical week. "Most of the shows that give us our strength Dynasty, Hart to Hart, Fantasy Island and Three's Company were not on," an ABC spokesman said. "They were pre-empted by Masada," he said.
