Hylan Building in honor of one of Rochester's business leaders and a pioneer in American aviation. Hylan, a longtime friend of the university, is a member of the university's Presidents Society and the University of Rochester Associates. The university's board of trustees named the building in his honor. Hylan was born in Fitchburg, and came to Rochester when he was 14. During the 1920s and 1930s he was a barnstorming pilot.

He built his own airport in Henrietta in 1939 and has been operating the Ray Hylan School of Aeronautics at Rochester-Monroe County Airport for more than 40 years. Hylan is part-owner with the Wilmorite Corp. of Marketplace mall, which is scheduled to open next week. Part of the land for the mall is on the site of the old Hylan Airport. Hylan also is an owner of the Pittsford Plaza shopping center.

The Hylan Building was constructed in 1971. Together with the James P. Wilmot Building (housing the Institute of Optics) and Charles Force Hutchison Hall (chemistry, biology, and geological sciences), it forma the River Campus science complex. UR President Robert Sproull said, "The university is proud that one of its academic buildings bears the name of a man whose record of achievement will serve as an inspiration to future generations."
