Louis tonight United Press International, Associated Press ST. LOUIS The Milwaukee Brewers do jt with gusto; the St Louis Cardinals are more on the light and mellow side. The styles of the two teams in the 79th World Series are as different as a Pilsner beer is from stout On the one hand, there were the Brewers baseball's home run kings with 216 during the regular season, brute force with a capital On the other hand, there were the Cardinals with the fewest home runs in the major leagues this year, 66, yet with a team batting average of .264, second highest in the National League. "If you have 10 big guys and 10 little guys," Milwaukee catcher Ted Simmons said, "the 10 big guys usually win. But that's not always the way it works out in baseball.

The nature of the game is such that you never know what will happen. Baseball is more sophisticated than just big versus small." "The Brewers are an excellent hitting team," St Louis Manager Whitey Herzog said, "just like the Braves. But if our pitchers do the same consistent job they've done the last three games, we'll do OK." The Brewers come into the Series as the only team to win a best-of-five league championship series. LOUIS If you're weary of coast-to-coast World Series' starring Rocky Steinbrenner and Hollywood celebrities, this one's for you. St Louis vs. Milwaukee. It has every- -thing except Reggie. He's sitting out this dance.

In fact, Mr. October won't even be watching. Sorry, NBC. "I've never really been big for watching the World Series on television," Jackson said after his season and the Mauchingbirds' ended Sunday. "It doesn't interest me.

It's a great time to go horseback riding or driving around town. No one else is on the streets." NEVER MIND Reggie. He won't be missed, anyway. Set in a Midwest back-. drop, between two beer-producing and beer-guzzling towns that have waited for quite a spell to sip champagne again, this refreshing Suds Series that opens tonight in Busch Stadium is blessed with intrigue.

This Bud's for you, baseball, for giving us Robin and Ozzie, the supreme short- stops in the game, both ready to dazzle us, one with his stick, the other with his glove. This Bud's for you, baseball, for giving us Harvey's Four-Base-At-A-Time Brewers, and Whitey's One-Base-At-A-Time Cardinals. This Bud's for you, baseball, for giving us green grass and cozy County Stadium, and astroturf and spacious Busch Stadium. This Bud's for you, baseball, for giving us Whitey Herzog. After all, he's the one who made much of this matchup all' possible.

They don't play baseball under the Arch; they play ping-pong balL Herzog's also the fellow who inadvert-. ently helped build the Brewers, too. These two clubs have absolutely nothing in common their styles of play are as different as each town's favorite brew except a Dec. 12, 1980 trade.

It was a big one for the Brewers, a giant stepping' stone to the franchise's first American League pennant It happened to help the Cardinals, too. ON THAT DAY, the Cardinals gave the Brewers Rollie Fingers, Pete Vuckovich, Ted Simmons and a partridge in a pear tree. In other words, a pennant winner. Turns out now that Fingers may be ready to come back and haunt the GM who owned him just four days. Brewers Manager Harvey Kuenn said Fingers can pitch to "one, two or three batters" if he needs him.

Even if he can't throw, there's always Huck Finn, the rookie masquerading as Pete Ladd. Pete should have been the MVP of the AL playoffs. Sure, Freddie Lynn hit .611 for the losers, but Pete pitched 1.000 (he faced 10 Angels and re-. tired 10 Angels) for the winners. But that's another tale.

In return for Fingers, Vuckovich and Simmons, Brewer GM Harry Dalton parted with Sixto Lez-cano, Lary Sorensen, David Green and Dave LaPoint Green and LaPoint are viewed as future stars, though left-hander LaPoint contributed to this Cardinals pennant with a 9-3 record and 3.42 earned run average. Herzog used Soren- son to acquire Lonnie Smith, a .307 hitter who swiped 68 bases. He used Lezcano to -land 12-game winner Steve Mura. WHITEY may have come out even on the deals, but now those people he let go are lined up in the other dugout Somebody asked Vuckovich, a hulking pitcher, about the trade. He danced around the pitching.

Game One of the Series is scheduled for 8:15 tonight (Ch. 8) at Busch Stadium in St Louis with Game Two there the fol- lowing night Following a travel day, the Series resumes with three games, if all are needed, in Milwaukee on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The final two games of the Series would be played in St Louis on Tuesday and Wednesday, if necessary. Here's a look at how the clubs match up position-by-position: 1 First base: Cecil Cooper of Milwaukee and Keith Hernandez of St Louis Cooper had his best season in the majors, finishing among the American League leaders in home runs (32), hits (205), batting average RBI (121) and doubles (38). He also is a Gold Glove candidate at first base, although he played sloppily against California in the playoffs.

Hernandez doesn't hit many homers (seven), but he's one of the game's best clutch hitters as evidenced by his 94 RBI. Defensively, he has no peer. Second base: Jim Gantner of Milwaukee and Tom Herr of St Louis. Gantner is a pesky hitter who hit .295 while batting in the No. 9 position for most of the season.

He is one of the game's outstanding second basemen and turns the double play as well as anyone in the league. Herr is basically a singles hitter (.266) who is aggressive on the bases and has proved to be a capable leadoff hitter. Defensively, he is sure-handed and teams well with shortstop Ozzie Smith on the double play. Shortstop: Robin Yount of Milwaukee and Ozzie Smith of St Louis. Yount virtually is everybody's choice for Most Valuable Player in the AL this season.

His camp, however, was adamant that they wouldn't let their fighter compete in Rochester. But money talks. The Fratto camp reportedly offered Mannion $20,000 to fight at the War Memorial.

"I want barrels of money for this fight, tons of money," said Mannion's co-manager and trainer, Jim Connolly, by telephone from Massachusetts last night "We'd love to fight him again and we'd fight him in Rochester if we thought we had a chance. Fratto (27-2) lost a unanimous 10-round' decision to Mannion (26-5-1) last Thursday night in Atlantic City, N.J., a fight that was televived by ESPN, the cable entertainment and sports network. In the locker room after the fight, the -soft-spoken Fratto slowly repeated, "I want a rematch.

I want a rematch." when Dick Williams was fired. Fanning led Montreal to the 1981 East title. Virdon was named NL Manager of the Year after leading the Astros to the West title in 1980, the first division championship in their 18-year history. The Astros barely missed a division title last year, but this season plunged to fifth, 12 games off the pace of the Atlanta Braves despite what Virdon called "the best team I ever had in Houston." Virdon, who had considered retirement after he was let go by the Astros, was Expos President John McHale's "number one candidate" for the job ahead of John McNamara of Cincinnati, Gene Michael of the New York Yankees and Don Zimmer of Texas. Virdon began managing in the New York Mets organization in 1966 and took his first major league job with Pittsburgh in 1972.

After winning the NL East title that year, Virdon was replaced by Danny Murtaugh on Sept 7, 1973, but was hired by the Yankees the following year. Unable to bring a championship to New York, Virdon was replaced by Billy Martin on Aug, 1, 1975, and then moved on to Houston a month later. Before becoming a manager, in 1966 with Williamsport of the Eastern League, Virdon was a long-time member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he earned recognition as one of the top defensive outfielders in the NL. He played his final minor league season, with the Wings in 1954 and hit .333 with 22 home runs and 98 runs batted in. The Wings were a St Louis Cardinals farm team in 1954.

In 1955, Virdon was the NL Rookie of the Year with the Cards, who traded him to Pittsburgh the following year. Democrat and Chronicle. Associated Press, United Press International Bill Virdon, fired this season after seven years as manager of the Houston Astros, will be named manager of the Montreal Expos, it was reported yesterday. 1 The National League team will hold a press conference today in Montreal to announce Virdon 's signing, a league source said. Virdon, who played for the Rochester Red Wings in 1954, reportedly will replace Jim Fanning as manager for the Expos.

Fanning will return to the front office following a disappointing season in which the Expos finished third in the NL East six games behind the division-winning St Louis Cardinals. Fanning, the Expos' former general man-, ager, took over the team on Sept 8, 1981.
