Silas had been sidelined since Saturday with a back injury, but the club doctor examined Silas and told Stepien he was not hurt "I am upset because they don't believe me," Silas said. Silas also said that Stepien offered him money to leave the team during a meeting Monday. "I never bribed anybody.

Eveybody knows I'm honest, maybe too honest" Stepien replied. Georgetown's Ewing won't go to NBA early Democrat and Chronicle Georgetown sophomore center Patrick Ewing said he will not join the National Basketball Association until he finishes his senior year, The Washington Post reported in its Thursday edi- .1 tions. "People seemed shocked," said the 7-foot Ewing, who could become a millionaire by turning professional.

"I don't know why they think it's odd for somebody to want to finish college just because he is a basketball player. "I'm here to better myself, to graduate and get my degree," Ewing told the newspaper. In the NCAA championship game against North Carolina, Ewing had 23 points and 11 rebounds. The towering center was called for goal-tending on North Carolina's first five baskets. The Hoyas, who play in the Big East conference along with Syracuse, begin practice for the 1982-83 season late next week.

Watson, Carrier honored The Golf Writers Association of America yesterday announced the selection of Tom Watson and JoAnne Carner as its 1982 players of the year. Watson, winner of the U.S. and British Opens, edged Masters winner Craig Stadler in voting by the association's 400 members. Carner won six tournaments this past season and qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame. Craig becomes free agent Jim Craig's 28-month stay with the Boston Bruins, punctuated by injuries and at times some acrimony, ended when the National Hockey League team bought out the option year of his contract making the U.S.

Olympic hero a free agent Craig, who participated in practice yesterday before receiving the news from General Manager Harry Sinden in a brief meeting, was not surprised by the move. He had seen no action during the exhibition season and the Bruins did not list him on their roster in the media guide. Boston made Craig available in Monday's waiver draft but there were no takers. Vitas Gerulaitis of the United States took just 46 minutes to score a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Wally Masur of Australia in the opening round of the $100,000 Gloweave indoor tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia. Among the other first-round winners were Eliot Teltscher and Matt Mitchell. United Press International Fans are under wraps and the players are in the dugout both waiting for the rain to stop during the NL playoff opener in St. Louis. NL postponement irks Niekro AflTOHELLI TIRE COMPANY low-priced ZSQ scrotal rainout, Game Five will be Monday afternoon in Atlanta.

"I thought we could get another at-bat or two in," Niekro said. "I played in worse weather. You figure you got two outs to go. It might take two pitches or it might take 10 minutes." ns Niekro had struggled through the early innings, throwing almost as many balls as strikes. Still, he could see good things ahead.

"My knuckleball was just starting to come back," he said. "I could feel it." United Press International ST. LOUIS Phil Niekro was as disappointed as anyone about yesterday's National League playoff game being postponed because of rain. The Atlanta pitcher had given up just four hits in AVz innings and his Braves teammates had given him a 1-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals before rain washed out the game.

Game One will be replayed from the beginning tonight (Channel 13, and if the series goes five games and barring another Angels' Kison handcuffs Brewers, 4-2 FROM PAGE 1D the time. But this victory, offensively, at least, was the product more of the Angels' No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, shortstop Tim Foli and catcher Bob Boone. In this dash of offensive titans, it was Foli's single and Boone's suicide squeeze bunt that gave the Angels a 2-0 lead in the second, and Boone's sacrifice fly that made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Kison might have had a shutout, but Lynn, the center fielder, made an ill-advised decision to try to make a diving catch of a liner off Molitor's bat in the fifth. He missed the ball, and what otherwise would have been a single turned into a two-run, inside-the-park homer that pulled the Brewers to within 4-2. But not a single Brewer reached after the homer, and so now they're in a most awkward position: No club in AL playoff history has rebounded from an 0-2 deficit Kison was asked about his October magic; he was 3-0 in post-season play with the Pirates in the late "70s. "I've benefited from being with good clubs in pennant races," he said. "A pitcher can't do things by himself.

You need offensive and defensive support Otherwise, I don't have a good answer for you If I did, I'd apply it the rest of the year." He may be intruding on Reggie's month, but Jackson doesn't mind. "I'd like to share the Mr. October label with the whole California club," said Jackson, who tied George Brett for most AL playoff homers with his sixth and became the all-time playoff leader in RBI with 18. "On October 15, everybody can be Mr. October.

Just send me the check." Jackson's homer, in the third inning, gave California a 3-0 lead at All-star games still off FROM PAGE 1D head of the Players All-Star Season. "We are gratified that Judge John Penn issued an order preventing the clubs in the NFL from continuing these actions," he said. "Now, if they want to stop players from participating in the all-star games, management must come before Judge Penn here in Washington and defend the questionable validity of the Standard Player Contract" "The decision ends the harassment of players in the field," said Doug Allen, a union official. "We are going ahead with the games." The first in the proposed 20-game series now is set for Oct 17 in RFK Stadium in Washington. "With the games pushed back, the pressure is off and we have more time to file to stop the game," said NFL attorney James McKay.

He also said the league would appeal in an effort to overturn the second portion of Perm's decision. "I'm disappointed and surprised at the judge's ruling that he couldn't enforce the contracts," McKay said. "We will have to abide by it but we will file an appeal in the Court of Appeals." The union contends segments of the contract can't be enforced because the collective bargaining agreement with the league expired last July 15. Penn said it "would be premature to decide whether those paragraphs are enforcable on the present record, as there are outstanding issues of fact which must be further developed before the court can reach the merits of the contract issue. For this reason the plaintiffs (union's) first request (to participate in the games) must be denied at this time." Fratto said he isn't worried about stage fright Mannion, by his own count has been on ESPN seven times.

"I need any edge I can get against Rocky," Mannion said. "If TV and the lights bewilder him, even for one round, that's great with me." Fratto and Mannion have one common opponent Scranton school teacher Steve Michelarya. Mannion lost a split decision, in Scranton, to Michelarya last month. Fratto decisioned Michelarya twice, but only after being knocked down once in their first fight and three times in their second fight Who does Michelarya pick? "Fratto should win if he gets inside," said Michelarya "Mannion likes to hit and hide get in and get out before he gets in any trouble. If Rocky can slow him down, he should win." Mannion has only 10 knockouts in his 31 pro fights and Fratto only nine knockouts.

I want to hear the applause. I want to be a crowd favorite. "I've had fights that were supposed to be on TV, but something always fell through.

And recently, my career kind of has been stuck in neutral. This should get me going in a hurry. Maybe ESPN will take a liking to me and I can get down here some more. "A good showing against Man-nion might interest the networks," Fratto added. "It might help me pick up some fans across the country.

It's a ready-made pick-me-up for my career." But what happens if Fratto loses? "I've got a reputation to uphold and a championship belt that could be tarnished if Mannion beats me," Fratto said. "If I'm having a hard time finding good opponents now, think of what it will be like if I lose. "But the positive side," Rocky added, "far outweighs the negative side."
