If Edgerton was the heart of the city, Ed-gerton Park was the heart of the neighborhood.

It's still going strong. City and state officials got together in 1846 to buy the site for the princely sum of $4,200. A number of institutions occupied the site, including: The Western House of Refuge, a home for wayward youth, later known as Industry, which stayed there until it moved to Rush in 1906; the Municipal Museum; and, beginning in 1911, the county fair was held in what was called Exposition Park until 1922, when it was named for former mayor Hiram H. Edgerton. Stokes and Fratta also remember the rodeo that came yearly to Edgerton Park up until about 1950, and a zoo, and the Rochester Royals basketball team that played in Edgerton's sports arena.

The Edgerton library was once the city's main library," Stokes says. They also said that an elephant of unknown origin was buried somewhere in the park around the turn of the century. "I've heard one was, in the early 1900s, but I don't know why," Stokes says. Today, the Edgerton Recreation Center is the city's biggest, he says. "The park is something like 12 acres.

It's got seven ball diamonds, a football field, a special all-weather track, soccer fields, basketball, boccie "Then there's all the Italian bakeries," Fratta says. "We also have some small, independent Italian mom-and-pop groceries." And, the center's Stardust Room. From the 1920s to the 1940s, people danced to big band music until World War II robbed the ballroom of its sparkle. Today, senior citizens still dance at the Stardust on Monday afternoons though archery and table tennis dominate most of the time. In April, a Nate Rawlg Big Band dance drew 470 people.

Edgerton's $129,000 community development proposal this year includes $31,500 to rehabilitate the ballroom. "The total (rehab) plan will take four years and cost about $100,000," Stokes says. Another $35,000 will go for NHS operating expenses, with $35,000 also slated for the NHS revolving loan fund. Another $10,000 is proposed to refurbish Taco-ma Park, with $5,000 slated for a gazebo in Jones Square and $15,000 earmarked for commercial assistance programs along Lyell and Dewey avenues. A $2,000 carryover from the current year's budget brings the total to $131,500.

But that's in the long run. In the short run, the neighborhood is working on its Sunday in the Park celebration, to be held Aug. 29 in Jones Park. "We'll have information booths, bands, exhibits," Fratta says. "A lot of people are coming out to see the river and falls for the first time," Davis said. "It's another world down there." Kay Abrams stood on a ledge overlooking the Genesee River's rose-colored cliffs and watched a man in a kayak battle the river's swift current "You don't have to hear the sound of traffic," said Abrams, of 95 Presque St over the roar of the falls. "That's nice." Abrams said she read about Rediscover the River Day in the paper and decided to come to the Maplewood Rose Garden and hike on the Maplewood Trail, which stretches from the Lower Falls overlook at Driving Park to King's Landing Cemetery.

After spending several hours scrambling around the narrow paths, Abrams said with a gasp, "I'm doing pretty good for a person with acrophobia (the fear of heights)." "I think this is a beautiful area," Abrams said. "I wish there was more access to the river." trians to walk down the road but block cars. "That proposal is being considered," Peck said. also is considering Davis' suggestion that the stairs be opened to the public. But again there's a problem.

"There some undermining of that (viewing) area that we're worried about with people out there," Peck said. Adding the sites is particularly important because of the vistas from them, Davis said. "This (request to open up the two sites) is one of those things you can't get off dead center easily," he said. "But the more people see the falls up close, the more interested they are in the river." Yesterday's events included a canoe race and exhibit, guided tours of King's Landing and Mount. Hope cemeteries, bicycle and hiking excursions, views of roses and geological formations, and a public singalong at Ontario Beach Park.
