"His shoes were off and missing, when we found him," said the sheriff's deputy.

Forcino believes Huett, and possibly Mathias, made it to the trailer with Weiher, then left. He believes that Huett, confused and horrified after Weiher died, left to get away from the body. The discovery of the bodies has revived the unanswered questions. Why did they go up there? Why did the path lead to the trailer, a lone shelter in a vast wilderness? "If you didn't know where it was at, it would be one in 1,000 of finding that kind of place," said Forcino. He can't help thinking, he said, that there's more to it than coincidence.

(UPI) When five slightly retarded young men vanished 110 days ago, it looked like a terrible accident, perhaps growing out" of" nothing more than simple confusion over the way home. Now, with four of their bodies found with signs of desperate fight for survival in the high Sierras, authorities and families aren't so sure. Deputy Sheriff Dennis Forcino, for one, promises to keep pressing to find out what happened to Jack Madruga, 30, Jack Huett, 26, Gary Mathias, 20, Ted Weiher, 32 and William Sterling, 29, of the Marysville-Yuba City area. It "bugs the hell out of me," says Forcino, head of the Plumas County team that looked for the men.

Relatives from four of the five families said it was out of character for the men to go off to' the mountains willingly. "We know' there's more to it than what's been said," said Madruga's mother. With the melting of the mountain snows, some of the mystery has cleared. The bodies of all but Mathias were and handling. 95 additional forC.O.D.

Wearing street clothes and low cut shoes, they went an incredible 19 miles through 4-and 6-foot deep snow. A storm howled most of the night. Forcino figures it took at least the night and a day to travel that distance before Weiher and possibly two others stumbled onto a snowbound Forest Service trailer at the Daniel Zink campgrounds. Stirling and Madruga apparently died 4 miles short of the frailer. Weiher, his feet frozen, lived in the Major Credit Cards Honortd found last week, and he search continues for him in the mountains about 20 miles west of Quincy.

According to authorities, the five friends, all of whom lived happily with their families, unaccountably turned off a freeway on the way home from a basketball game in Chico, the night of Feb. 24. They drove east rather than south toward home past Lake Oro-ville and up a mountain road until the pavement ended. They followed a dirt track until their vehicle mired down 200 yards into the snowline. They got out, it appears, and walked and ran uphill in the middle of the night into the deepening drifts.
