JJcl tlcnd Animals Found In Tyrone's Xcw Iteanrvolr. A minor gained considerable currency during the past couple of days, that the carcasses of two cows and a horse had been found iu the reservoir of the Tyrone Gas and Water company, aud that there is a green scum upon the surface of the water there, all purporting that tho water piped to Tyrone for drinking purposes is impure and dangerous. This rumor has frightened many people into refraining from use of the water, and many families have taken tho precaution to boil tho water used for drinking and cooking. It is never a bad plan to boil water thus used for the process is sure to render it surely wholesome, but with pure water of course there is no necessity for boiling. O.

H. Dieffenbangh, superintendent for tho Tyrone Gas and Water company, lias heard of these reports, aud being satisfied that there is absolutely no foundation for them today made tho follow- world who will consider him distin guished looking. Work upon constructing the various buildings for the new glass works at Cold Spring Forgo, is being pushed rapidly forward, and the foundation walls for the office and storage buildings are already erected, while excavating is being hurried on the sites of the other proposed structures.

The work is being done under tho personal direction of Superintendent George W. McGraw, who is desirious of having tho plant put iu operation at the earliest possible date. York, of Warriorsinark, had a first-class opportunity to kill or capture an immense blacksnake which would have been a notable county fair attraction, bat realizing that the blacksnake is one the best friends the farmer has, as it is a groat mouser, he left the reptile go on its way rejoicing.

Mr. York was driving along at the usual spirited pace of his pretty team, iu the neighborhood of Peuuiugtou, when he espied tbe snake which be first stated "reached from one side of the road to the other," but be finally brought the length down to five feet which certainly represents a large reptile. He baited bis team and permitted the siutke to get off tbe track, wbiob tbe latter seemed perfectly willing to do, witb as rapid a wriggle as it bad in stock. ing statement to tho Herald: "The report circulated that there is a green scum on the water in tho reservoir or that there is or has been any carcass of any kind in it, is false. I believe our water is as clean, pure and wholesome as it ever was.

If I believed it otherwise, I should at once notify the consumers. Myself and family use tho water for drinking, right from tho spigot, without boiling or filtering. We would not do so if there were any doubt about its It will bo soon that Superintendent Dieffenbaugh is very positive iu his statements, and this denial should set at rest the rumor which has so violently disturbed some of our people. Borough council recently provided for a thorough investigation of tho purity of Tyrone's water supply, au excellent precaution which should be taken at intervals oven when there is no special reason for suspecting that tho water might be impure. We have not yet learned of any report being made from tho investigation which tho borough authorities proposed to institute, but in the absence of such report, the statement of Mr.

Dieffeubaugh will certainly allay the uncertain feeling with which some of our citizens have been annoyed. A CHURCH. A QiilHltiB Party Interrupted by tlte In- lending llovlne. Fourteen ladies of the First Methodist congregation took a recess from their quilting party yesterday afternoon to shoo a cow out of chnrch. The ladies were busy at their quilting bee and the usual conversazione which accompanies such labor, in one of the class rooms in tho basement of the chnrch.

Tho Twelfth street door leading into the lecture room was ajer to admit fresh air from the outer world. A red cow had been hunting for grass on Twelfth street but owing to tho good work that Street Commissioner Cocbran has been doing, the grazing on our public highways has been meagre, and the bovine could not occupy her time in dining, so she about for other fields of action. The open doorway attracted her attention and she straightway decided to go to church. This fact at once establishes the intelligence and commendable yearning of the animal, for there are many of tho humankind here to whom such a reasonable idea has never occurred. No sooner was tho idea foimed than it was acted upon.

The cow walked complaisautly through the open dorway, and proceeded up tho middle aisle of the lecture room with all the decorum that could bo required of a veteran class SEPTEMBER 13 TO 18 KABO CORSETS Women wear corsets for looks and comfort. OWOIIM f.iilili-.t Trusty Over it IMHlciilt Itontu. Councilman James T. Owens, of the first ward, returned this morning from his extensive tour awheel through the counties of Blair, Cicarfiold, Jcfftrson, Clarion, Armstrong, Indiana, and Cambria, during which lie passed over a country, he thinks, as rough and desolate in many places us tho Klondike region could possibly bo. In all ho covered about 400 miles on his trusty bicycle. Mr.

Owens' lust day on the road, considering that he had been riding steadily for the previous eight days, was certainly a remarkable achievement. He loft tho town of Indiana Wednesday morning and reached Bellwood early iu the evening, a distance of miles, From Indiana to Ebensbnrg, ho passed over Devil Bond and Turtle Creek mountain, the former about four miles aud tho latter about throe miles from foot to summit; and other portions of tho road wore hilly, rocky and snndy. Then before reaching Altoona he passed over the Allegheny mountain, and from Buck Horn, the summit of tho mountain he rode to Eleventh avenue, Altoonu, with scarcely the need of touching the pedals of his wheel. It was a delightful trip uud Mr. Owens, who is an enthusiastic wheelman, is glad that he took it, though he is just as glad to get homo, for tho difficult route is one which not many younger men would care to take, and our townsman is very well satisfied to speud a few days quietly at homo securing rest after tho extended exorcise which was healthful but of course tiring.

reached the front platform whore her presence was discovered by tho fourteen quilters then there was coustervation in the party. But the ladies did not cower at the cow here. They simply organized themselves into a solid phalanx and proceeded to expel the intruder. The gcutlc animal was not at all stubborn and seemed to realize that she war. in tho wrong pew, for she turned around quietly and retraced her steps, as the ladies approached with swingingaprons and expressions of unwelcome.

The trip back through the aisle and out the doorway was made without damage to furniture, and the intruding bovine found hor way safely to tho street where she is permitted to roam during daylight hours. It was an amusing interlude in tho ladies' work, furnishing them a pleasant rest for a few minutes, and the whole affair wus handled on the one side with such animal intelligence, and difference what made of or who the corset isn't right the deess will not be right. Kaho corsets are made to fit. They fit perfectly and easily. They have soft loop eyelets in place of the old style metal eyelets.

Loop eyelets don't cut the laces. The eyelets are made of the same material as the lacer. You can buy a pair take them home, try them on, and if you don't like them bring them back and get your money. We have engaged 'from the Chicago Corset company one of their most expert fitters who will be glad to explain the merits of these corsets. Wlmt Hone Today's AimiKo- tiit'iilH anil Tlinxo of Tomorrow. Yesterday the second day of tho Blair County fair was greeted by an audience of about 8,500 persons. The weather was perfect aud tho racing contests were strictly on merit and first-class iu every respect, every contestant being out to win. Iu tho 3-65 class, seveu horses answered the call of tho starter, aud of these two, Mountain Billy and Prince, finished behind tho banner in tho first heat. Tho race proved an easy victory in one, two, three order for Bell Medium, owned by Stewart Pigeon, of Houtzdale.

The 3.85 class, purse $350, proved 0110 of the grandest horse race contests over witnessed. Four horses responded when the race was called, aud every heat was a hammer and tongs contest between Peter S. Duncan's Priiiceps driven by D. Caldwell, andFerucliff, owned by Wesley Cavanaugh and driven by John Ponder. In the first heat Ferncliff took the lead at the first turn aud maintained that position to the finish, although Prinoeps uudor a vigorous application of the persuader, made a gallant effort to overtake tho loader ou the stretch.

Tho best ho could do was to fluish tho heat ou Feriioliff's wheel iu the fast time of 9.83 1-5. There were five entries in the pretty buby contest, the prize being awarded to tho baby of Mr. aud Mrs. John Hunter, of Hollidaysburg. Today the horse and bicycle races are progressing as per program, aud au exceedingly large crowd is ou the grounds.

Yesterday tho Logau baud of Altoouu furnished music for the fair. Today the Altoouu City baud has the place, and tomorrow the Tyrone City band will occupy the music stand.
