Purdy of the Fire Department has begun to arrange for the ninth annual convention of the Illinois Firemen's Association, to be held iu ia-st St. Louis Jan. 12 to 14 inclusive. The railroads have made a rate of one and one-th ird fare to a.11 cesirtng to attend the convention and the local hotels have guaranteed cheap rates for tho occasion. The Association is the largest of a similar character in the world, and it is expected that 300 delegates will bo in attendance, besides a large number of representatives of manufactories of lira apparatus from various sections of tho country.

Kast St. Louis is considered by the Association as the most desirable point In the Atate to hold the convention and President M. J. Myers of Mount Pulaski and Secretary E. W.

Barkman of Decatur have informed Chief Purdy that every effort is leing maiie to secure tho largest attemd.Tiee in the history of the organization. A large number of important papers to fire matters will be read, and the constitution and by-laws are to be re-vtr-d. The Revision Committee has prepared exhaustive report to be presented to the convention for open discussion. Chairman Staymates of the Committee on Topics reports that he has secured several leading writers for the occasion. Among the notables who have signified their intention of attending at least one day are Fire Marshal Purcell of Dublin, Ireland; Commissioner Sciineider of the Chester Penitentiary; Treasurer Buck of Monmouth; Chairman Chain of the Legislative Committee; Chief Swingley and ex-Chief John Lind-pay of St.

Chief George C. Hale of Kansas City and Chief Swenie of Chicago Chief Wilmarth of Topeka, is slated for a paper. The convention will fix the date and plac for holding the next tournament and a vast amount of routine business will be attended to. During the convention the citizens of Bast St. Louis will tender the visitors a grand banquet and ball at Music Hall, the time not having yet ben fixed.
