Though the sextet has been wary of varying the multi-platinum, formula, it's often a formula of surprising complexity and musicality.

Foreigner songs are usually structured around good guitar hooks, and are supported by multiple track keyboards and strong rhythm. Though the lyrics aren't especially inventive or witty, they usually aren't pretentious or clumsy. Instead, they're appropriate rock lyrics in the sexy street rebel stance of the genre. Best of all, Foreigner offers in former Roches-terian Lou Gramm a lead singer who is gradually emerging as the best vocalist in hard rock. Gramm originally owed a lot to the likes of Robert Plante, Paul Rodgers and Roger Daltry, but has developed more color, beauty and power than any of his predecessors.

Gramm is especially adept at maintaining the beautiful tone of his voice while simultaneously going for incredibly high volume, and that's not an easy thing to do. Foreigner's third album, Head Games, released this week, will do little to alter this band's status, one way or the other. The band also is beginning a major tour soon with a stop at the Community War Memorial Saturday, Oct. 27. The album makes a few attempts at increased diversity.

But Head Games is strongest when it rocks hard and nasty, in tunes like Rev on the Red Line, Head Games, and all five songs on the first side, Dirty White Boy, Love on the Telephone, Women, I'll Get Even With You, and Seventeen. Although its structure seems simple, Women is in many ways the most interesting song on the album. It was written by the band's chief architect, guitarist Mick Jones, and consists of a long series of phrases describing a large variety of women who satisfy, Women you can't buy, Women in magazines, Women in a There isn't a completed sentence in the lyric. Such a repeated phrase structure could be dangerous, but Gramm brings it the necessary interest and vitality through his well-phrased vocal It's not surprising that all but two of the songs on the album are either written or co-written by Jones he's obviously got the best ear for commercial rock hooks. The second most prominent writer is Gramm, who usually contributes lyrics.

A drag-racing song co-written by Gramm and pianist Al Rev on the Red Line, even contains a Rochester reference: "Runnin' all night on Lake Avenue, It's a piece of cake." Three songs packaged consecutively between two rockers on side two are the group's attempts at diversity. The Modern Day is lighter than most Foreigner rockers because it's the one song on the album with a different singer Jones takes the lead. Blinded by Science is a strange ballad with an out-of-place, vaguely stated diatribe against putting your trust in science. And Do What You Like is a Gramm-Ian McDonald medium-tempo tune that seems a little diffused. While diversity is to be praised, it'd be better served with more logical pacing.

The three songs should have been scattered among the Jones rockers, giving the album more balance. (And Gramm or someone else should have given Jones a better lyric for his Blinded by Science melody.) Still Head Games is a highly listenable and entertaining album especially on side one.
