Df MOCRAT AND CHRONICl E. MOCM tQft -TUESDAY, MAY 4. 1982 du! James Garner not mourning death of 'Maverick' Point-tnied 8-hour game fazes rac-man maze Personals 10 Auctions nnniLYN deck JOHNNY. I don want you to qo, but it you have to please come back Karen. MA Hit I started a novfma to St Jude.

by the 2nd day I had received 2 signs, on the 9th day 3 doctur's diagnosed My cancer as impruvd Thank You St Jude. Molemic HOLLYWOOD James Garner has lost his series and he has lost the woman who has served as his extremely valuable right arm. Meta Rosenberg, who served as executive producer of Garner's Nichols, Rockford Files and Bret Maverick series, said: "I quit last week never expecting that would be canceled. I got the show going, was certain it would be on for years, and decided it was time to go out on my own. I'm getting a lot of offers, and right now it's a matter of deciding which to choose." The fact that NBC has chosen not to renew Bret Maverick has come as a shock not only to Garner and Meta and Warner Bros.

-TV, with which they were partnered in the series but also to the industry at large. "I've been getting phone calls from executives at other networks, who just don't believe what NBC has done," says Warner Bros. -TV president Alan Shayne. "Bret Maverick was NBC's 7th-rated show. James Garner has been ranked 8th most popular out of 490 stars in the countjy.

I have to tell you this is a crushing blow. I'm simply shocked." But not surprised. Shayne reporte that Grant Tinker, NBC chairman, and Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC Entertainment, had informed him recently: "They only want shows for the young urban audience and didn't want Maverick. But we had been working hard to build.up our appeal with that segment of the audience, and were succeeding. We were also signing a young actor to the series for next season.

We were going to give the show a new look, and add a lot of action, and well, what more can I say than repeat I am in shock." As for Garner, he says maintaining his usual laid-back air he's refusing preparation for selling off the valuable West Los Angeles land for condo development. Meanwhile: Tandem-TAT shows (One Day at a Time, Diff'rent Strokes, Archie Bunker's Place, etc.) will roll at Universal Studios in August if Universal has found accommodations for them by then. Archie Bunker's Place has 'been shooting at CBS; the rest of the company's series have been headquartered at Hollywood's Metromedia studios, which wants its sound stage space back. "It's frantic time," a representative of the production firm said. "Our deal is all set at Universal, but we'll need at least six stages there, and we're just waiting and hoping they have the space available by the time we have to start new-season production." The Mel Brooks production NBC has trumpeted as a "very special special" to air this season is stacking up as a project that will never be made.

Heaven knows, NBC could certainly use it now with the network's cupboard so bare it's resorting to picking up other networks' reruns to run in the important May ratings sweeps and is taking off its own shelf some shows considered so weak they've been gathering dust since they were made in 79. That was the year when Brooks (in exchange for NBC's financing of his The Elephant Man feature) first agreed he'd make the special, but as things stand now, "it still may happen sometime, but not. in the near future." This is the word I get from his representative Irene Walzer, who says, "He just hasn't had the time." As for his outstanding Elephant Man financing commitment, she adds vaguely, "Everything has been amicably worked out" Marilyn Beck's column appears Tuesdays and Thursdays on this page. imnnis United Press International BUFFALO Eric Schwibs has conquered Pac-Man an event that apparently left the computer game in shrjek. Schwibs, 18, a computer science student at Buffalo State College, placed a quarter into the video game machine at. an Orchard Park tavern at 9:45 p.m. Saturday and played until 6 am. Sunday when the machine overloaded and split its screen.

His total: 2,935,590. "I am the king of Pac-Man," proclaimed Schwibs, whose play was witnessed by a bartender who kept the pub open as Schwibs racked up the points. Schwibs said the computer twice turned over after reaching 935,590 points, something the program does because the game accommodates only a six -digit number. But when his score reached almost 3 million, the image on the screen divided. On the left side was the Pac-Man maze, on the other was a mess of numbers and letters.

Local electronics technicians believe the computer's brains four computer chips could not handle the score, which overloaded its circuits. Schwibs, a Pac-Man player for about 14 months, believes his score is a world record for the deluxe version of Pac-Man. But officials at the Bally Manufacturing Midway Division which makes Pac-Man in Franklin Park, DI, contend 2.9 million is not a record, although they don't, keep Pac-Man scoring records. "One person went up to 4 million" before the screen gave out, said Andy Ducay, a service Manager for Midway. Schwibs claims he could have gotten a higher score had the computer not quit so soon.

"With two guys left (on the screen), I could have played for another eight hours," he said. "I couldn't be beat" Schwibs, meanwhile, hinted it might be his last Pac-Man game. "After a long game Uke that. I can't play for a couple of days Last night was my last game." E.L Doctorow, 'Ragtime' author, to speak on his popular novels Best-selling author E.L. Doctorow whose novel Ragtime inspired the film by the same name, will speak tonight about his work at 8 p.m.

at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. His speech will focus on his popular novels, Ragtime and Loon Lake, and earlier works, The Book of Daniel and Welcome to Hard Times. The lecture will be held in the NTID Theater of the Lyndon Johnson building off Jefferson Road in Henrietta. A self -described leftist recluse, Doctorow seldom grants interviews and has declined to talk with the press while in Rochester. His novels range from a western Welcome to Hard Times, published in 1960 and later made into an unsuccessful film starring Henry Fonda to a highly stylized novel about the Great.

Depression, Loon lake, his most recent work. Ragtime, Doctorow's most popular novel, created a stir when it was published in 1975 because it combined factual events and people from New York at the turn of the century with a fictional plot. Doctorow was graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio in 1948, attended Columbia University, and has taught at the University of California at Irvine, Sarah Lawrence College, Yale, and Princeton. He has worked in the publishing industry, serving as editor-in-chief and publisher at Dial Press in the late sixties. Van Cliburn-award winner to play The winner of the Von Cliburn International Piano Competition will perform at 8 tonight at the State University College at Brockport Pianist Andre-Michel Shub wiU perform in Wads-worth Auditorium, his first appearance in this area since winning the Cliburn competition in Texas last May.

Shub's program will include: Haydn's Sonata No. 52 in E-flat; Beethoven's Sonata No. 23 in F-minor (the Apassionata); Chopin's F-minor Fantasy and major Scherzo; and two of Liszt's Paganini Etudca. Tickets are $5 for the general public and mav be reserved by calling 1 -245-5873. Shub became famous overnight when the competition's finale was telecast nationwide; no young classical artist has received such extensive media attention since Cliburn himself won the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958.

In reading it, I also recalled the words of Jacques Maritain, the French philosopher, expressed at Aspen some years ago. He was dissatisfied with all his many books translated into English because "the translators who knew French did not know philosophy, and those who knew philosophy did not know French." The fact of the matter is that, while there are better and worse translatioas, even someone who knew both French and philosophy might have difficulty in converting French to English and vice versa because there is no one-to-one correlation between many words and phrases in these two languages.

(This, vent the awful "senior citizen." Literal translations are the worst. Mario Pei tells us that during World War II the Italians got one of their few laughs out of the literal translation of the British "Home Fleet" di which to them sounded like a domesticated tomcat. And when Fats Waller's song Ain't Misbehavin' was beamed to Russian radio, it was ren dered as Don't Do Anything Bad, which misses the whole flavor of it. Freud no doubt, has been wretchedly mistranslated (and thus misunderstood), but probably no worse than anyone else whose ideas are novel, complex or subtle. Actually, even within the same language, a different use of the same word can impede or paralyze communication.

An important conference, not long ago, between British and American officials ground to a halt when the British asked to "table" a resolution and the Americans objected. It turned out, however, that to "table" in Britain is to put it on the table for consideration, whereas in America it means to put it aside. So what chance did Freud have? Landers said yesterday she'll discon tinue using old letters immediately.

'My credibility is mil I have and I would never knowingly do anything to damage it," she said. Dear Ann Landers: Please settle an argument. Our brother, age 21, has been arrested and charged with criminal sexual assault in the first degree. He is accused of raping a 14-year-old girL The crime was committed one week after he was paroled from prison for a plea-bar- gained lesser offense. That one was rape, also.

My brother, sister and I have washed our hands of him. He has been in trouble ever since he was a child. When we tried to help him, we ended up getting involved in a mess because he couldn't even be honest with us. Every contact with our mother is the same: "Please write to him. I don't believe he did it.

If you don't forgive your own brother, I can't love you with a full heart." Should we continue to go see Mom, knowing she will pressure us? It's very depressing and we are sick of it- Hassled in Grand Rapids Dear G.R.: If you want nothing to do Dear Mom: What your daughter witnessed was not proof of love. It was a public display of poor taste, a lack of dignity and solid evidence that they have no respect for each other or the seasitivity of those around them. Dear Ann Landers: I'm a 55-year-old widow who looks younger, feels terrific and am comfortable financially. I live on Long Island. A cousin in Seattle sent me a picture of a divorced man my age.

He had seen a picture of me La her home and said, "She's what I've been dreaming about!" We have exchanged letters for five months and spoken on the phone several times. He sounds like my dream man, Ann. In today's letter he suggested I sell my home and come out and marry him. I know it sounds crazy, but I am tempted. My cousin refuses to advise me one way or the other.

When I ask specific questions she says, "I am no judge of that" I've been so lonely since my husband died. This is the first time I've felt anything for a man. I don't want to lose my chance for happiness. Please advise. Starlight Kisses Dear Star: Any woman who would sell her house and marry a mail-order Romeo has rocks in her clock.

Dear Ann Landers: Last night my 15-year-old daughter and I were coming home on the bus from a movie. A teen-age couple sat in front of us. They were wrapped around each other French-kissing like you wouldn't believe.

Their hands were everywhere. They were totally oblivious to anyone around them. I was stunned when my daughter sighed, "It must be wonderful to be in love like that" I was amazed at her comment, but instead of responding I told her I would write to you, describe the scene and ask your opinion. After all, I am only her mother which means I am from the olden days. Please, Ann, say something.

In extreme cases, even irritation from bra straps or belts will do the same thing. Antihistamines sometimes help control this kind of skin sensitivity. Also, you have to avoid any substance that is known to be a hive producer, like aspirin. They can add to the skin's touchiness. I am taking it for granted, L.P.

14614. Because of the volume of his mail, he is unable to answer individual letters. Dear Dr. Donohue: Recently, I read about a woman suffering from hyperhidrosis, an extreme sweating problem. I am an 18-year-old and have had this malady my whole life.

It is very embarrassing and I've restricted my activities and social life drastically to conceal my sweaty hands. Could you please explain just exactly what hyperhidrosis is, who it can effect, and how it can be cured? Please help me and any others who are suffering emotionally as well as physically.
