2-B WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1994 SCOREBOARD GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS Local Scoreboard Volleyball Clear Creek topples Clear Uake LEAGUE CITY The Clear Creek Lady Wildcats battled back from a pair of big deficits to beat the Clear Lake Lady Falcons Tuesday in a District 24-5A varsity match. Clear Creek trailed 8-0 in first match, prompting head coach Laruie Briggs to call a timeout and try to regroup. "I told them they couldnt play any worse than that and that it was time for them to get out there and play," said Briggs, who was the freshman coach at Clear Lake the two previous seasons. The Lady Wildcats responded by outscoring Clear Lake 14-1 en route to a come-from-behind victory. However, Clear Creek fell behind again in the second game 11 2.

"After our toss to Alvin, I knew we couldn't go three games with Clear Lake. We couldn't do anything to let them think they could beat us. We had to win that game." Meredith Phillips sparked the Lady Wildcats with a big defensive play in the second game, going far out of bounds to pick up a ball and keep it in play for her team to eventually win the volley. "Our defensive plays really psyched the team up," Briggs said. Leslie Brvenick also had five kills out of eight sets in the second game while teammate Shannon Gamer served up the final six points.

"We were really nervous and uptight," Briggs said. "If a big lift for us to come back and beat them. WeVe been trying all season to get over the hump. We've played well in some big matches, but we haven't won the big ones. I think this might be the big win we've needed.

That's- the sign of a good team when you can come back and don't lose your composure. They never quit." With the victory, Clear Creek sits atop the district standings with a 7-1 record.
