Moody made it look so easy Thursday at Kilbourn Hall, but that's how it goes after 82 years. The icon played a smooth tenor over standards, accompanied by a trio he picked up hanging around outside, looking for work: pianist Bill Dobbins, bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Mike Melito, all familiar to jazz fans here. Moody was so relaxed, he'd stop playing in mid-riff, set down his sax, shuffle over to the microphone and tell a ridiculously corny joke.

Or bellow his version of "Pennies From Heaven." As a crooner, Moody sings like a sax, with plenty of bleating. But everyone's having a good time, and this miraculously blessed jazz fest both in surprising discoveries and the weather rolled smoothly through Day Seven. Latin bones Trombones have been highly visible at this year's fest with Bonerama and Robin Eubanks, but the founder of the Latin ill FMiiwfUO'jri KJ fNMNQOif I Uliuii 1 Mill Side of Miles Davis, Conrad Herwig, was simply mind-blowing. Herwig pointed out that the group was not only about reinterpreting Davis, but also John Coltrane (that Latin Side was nominated for a Grammy) and Wayne Shorter (the next Latin Side, represented here with But for another full house at the Harro East, Herwig chose to turn a piece from Davis' Kind of Blue, Bill Evans' "Flamenco Sketches," into a full-blown Cuban workout. Likewise Kind of Blue's "So with the familiar horn riff (sax, trumpet and trombone here) backed by an unexpected Latin rhythm.

The chore of interpreting Davis' trumpet fell to Mike Rodriguez, who didn't bother copying Davis' tone, but did quite well as his own man. If Rodriguez looked familiar, you saw him Wednesday at Montage with the outrageously entertaining Matt Wilson Arts Crafts. Cat fever High Fidelity was shoulder-to-shoulder from the stage to the exits, and the body heat built the room into a slow sauna, yet few people moved for an hour. Catherine Russell is a late bloomer, having just released her first album at age 50, but she might have won the festival's Rookie of the Year award with a relaxed, almost giddy personality, perfect song choices, a huge smile and an even bigger voice. "This is not a polished show, y'all," Russell said.

"It's not slick, not pretentious." Indeed, when she forgot the words to a Willie Dixon song, she recovered charmingly, and the crowd loved her for it. Russell is Ella Fitzgerald, not with a big voice, but in all its depth, and she uses it to revive a catalog of lost souls. She is Alberta Hunter reincarnated, channeling Sam Cooke's "Put Me Down Easy" and Bessie Smith. Fishing for tunes Norway's quirky trio In the County filled the Lutheran Church of the Reformation with the dirge "Ashes to Ashes," with a sonic build-up worthy of El-gar, leading into "Everyone Live Their Life" with the James Joyce-like chorus of "Everyone's Going to Die." Cheer up. They also have a fishing-tips song, landing trout by shining a light in their eyes and hitting them with a club. ii cricr-ef imiihhI got a coffin just your size," the crowd howled with glee.

She delivered on the amusing sexual innuendo of Pearl Bailey's "I'm Lazy, That's All." And when she was done, everyone in the audience wanted to hug her, but settled for a rush to the merchandise table, where all 55 copies of her album were immediately sold. The songs are a time machine, for sure. Yet for a reminder of Russell's show you need only to have traveled back 24 hours. In spirit and character, Russell was like Bettye LaVette the previous night at the Harro, form because of illness, but nothing was said on stage. And nothing seemed to be missing.

Congo Square, of course, is the latest in an impressive series of large suites by Marsalis, and, to these ears is the most entertaining, accessible and tuneful to date. (I prefer it to his Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields.) It may be that Congo Square reflects the strong influence of the compositions and arrangements of Duke Ellington, especially when he was wearing his "big suite" hat. The performances were stun- A PIE IN THE or visit vww.cityofrochester.gov BotMrt J. Kudos go to bassist Carlos Henriquez, who built many of the rhythmic bridges between the African drummers and the LCJO.
