We lurk in places and follow you," she said. She encouraged the students to write down their experiences and to be spies to help their writing. MacLachlan said her began writing when she was a child, but it was not until Sick Day was published in 1979 that she became an established author.

MacLachlan said she wasn't surprised when Sara, Plain and Tall was made into a movie, because she knew Glenn Close had recorded the book. MacLachlan said the pair worked together after Close was chosen for the starring role. MacLachlan did the screenplay for the television movie which aired earlier this year. Although the Massachusetts resident has written some adult material, she prefers to write for children. "It has a certain directness and honest she said.

"I would never stop writing for kids." With 12 books already published, MacLachlan said she has new ones in the works. Her newest book is Journey. For the Gates sixth-graders, MacLachlan's visit provided a chance to meet an author many said they have read. Students said they found parts of her talk inspirational. "It was a very interesting and descriptive talk," said Micheal Mesolella, 11.

"I like her speech, especially how she came up with the title Momma One, Momma Two," said Alenia Mallory, 11. The author was in town to speak at the Rochester Area Reading Council's annual authors dinner. Marie Ginther, assistant principal, arranged MacLachlan's visit to Gates Chili Middle School. "I just think it was so nice she related her stories to the kids. Who knows, we may have a future author in the room." By Diana Carter Our Towns GATES Read some of Patricia MacLachlan 's books and without even knowing it, you're taking a I peek into her family's life and history.

The author, who spoke to sixth-graders at Gates Chili Middle School Oct. 24, said she borrowed from her family history, names and experiences to write the children's book Sara, Plain and Tall. "My mother's uncle wrote away for a wife," said the former English teacher. MacLachlan said the whole book grew out of that one incident in her family's past. She told the students how her experiences as a child and adult have shaped some of her books and their characters.

MacLachlan said the dogs in Sara; Plain and all were named for her dead aunt and uncle, Lottie and Nick. "When it came down to it, I changed life and made it come out like I wanted," she said. MacLachlan said she gave one of her dogs, Hilly, eternal life by resurrecting her as the old housekeep-er in Sara, Plain and Tall. She told the students that their experiences could become part of any book that they might write. Ma-i cLachlan said as an only child, she used to make up imaginary friends and relatives.

One of her friends: a one-armed paper hanger. "He used to encourage me to draw on the walls," she said, laughing. He became a character in Seven Kisses in a Row. MacLachlan credited her father with helping her to use her imagination, as well. "When I was a girl, we used to act out Peter Rabbit," she said.

MacLachlan said her father would pretend to in-t terview her as Peter and he would be Farmer McGregor. Her family still is a source of inspiration for her books. She said it was her son's objection to eating VISA uw.n...
